Does anyone have any thoughts as to the validity of the last phrase of Luke 4:4 being in the Bible today?

I dunno, but here is a comparison of several e-sword versions FYI:

    Luk 4:4

(ALT) And Jesus answered to him, saying, "It has been written, '{The} person will not live on bread only, _but_ on every word of God.'" [Deut 8:3]

(BBE) And Jesus made answer to him, It has been said in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need.

(CEV) Jesus answered, "The Scriptures say, 'No one can live only on food.' "

(Darby) And Jesus answered unto him saying, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

(DRB) And Jesus answered him: is written that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.

(EMTV) But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' "

(ESV) And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"

(GB) But Iesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not liue by bread only, but by euery word of God.

I have heard of a couple of different arguments by critical text advocates. The first states that a scribe copying the text mistakingly added the phrase to the end of Luke 4:4 because he was so familiar with the phrase from the parallel passage in Matthew. The other states that the scribe added the phrase so that the Luke and Matthew passages read the same-thus strengthening the idea.

The other is probably the closest. The phrase seems so unnatural in that place primarily because it is nowhere even close to Matthew or Deuteronomy rendering. Secondly, it becomes clear when we think about lectionaries of the early church that "but by every word of God" was a comment added by a scribe or pastor and then copied in each generation of copies much like a study Bible would be subject to if it were written by hand today.

Was the phrase in question contained in the original autograph? Good question. Luke 4:4 reads like this:

The NKJV also includes this footnote: NU-Text omits but by every word of God.

The parallel verse in Matthew reads the same:

The original passage in Deuteronomy also contained the phrase.

It would make sense that the phrase would have been included in Luke's writing, since it was included in the verse Luke was quoting. However, if the phrase actually wasn't in Luke's writing, I can see where some well-meaning scribe along the way may have added it to more closely convey the thought of the original.

The footnote in the NKJV says that the NU-Text doesn't contain the phrase. I wonder what some of the other manuscripts show?

Hey, Doc Cassidy, what can you contribute?
