Some people have tried to justify their beliefs about a certain doctrine about a certain Bible version by quoting "By their fruits", citing the longevity of a version & how often it's been used in "revivals" and evangelistic crusades. However, this is NOT what those Scriptures are about. From the KJV, we see:

Matthew 7:5Beware of ***false prophets***, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

    (roby: WHO ARE "THEM"?)

17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Some folks try to cite the 'fruits' verses as being applicable to their fave bible version(s). However, we see JESUS PLAINLY SAYS to whom those verses apply...FALSE PROPHETS.

    Any comments?

I am not familiar with the above argument about bible verions. I am more familiar with Mormons (and others) who have told me that their fruits (i.e., good works) show them to be Christians.

I think "fruits" encompasses behavior and teachings/doctrine. If someone does good works but has beliefs or teachings that go against the Bible, then we are to reject those "fruits" because they have been shown to come from a rotten or corrupt tree.

God doesn't mix fruit. If someone comes to the door dressed nicely, acting polite, they don't smoke or drink, but they are preaching another Jesus and another Gospel they are still accursed according to scripture.

Robycop3, the Matthew passage you quoted above has absolutely nothing to do with God's word. It should not be used in support of any Bible version. Anyone who thinks this passage refers to a Bible version has a comprehension problem - they just don't comprehend (or they just haven't looked at) the true meaning. The passage is indeed telling us to beware of false prophets.

Thing is, Keith, the "fruits" thingie IS used by some advocates of a certain doctrine concerning bible versions, and that's why I wanted to remind those interested that this was NOT rightly dividing the Scriptures.

Mormons cannot claim their fruits are good. Just look at all those teens running away from home down there. Utah has a higher rate of divorce than many states and teen suicides are always the highest in Utah. So there fruits do show that the Mormons are nothing more than a front but behind they are nothing more than another false religion.

A couple years ago I went home to visit mom at Christmas... growing up she always had a fresh fruit basket on her table.

I walked in walked over to the table, grabbed a beautiful apple, started to take a bite out of it, when I noticed it was PLASTIC!!

Ther verse is talking about False Prophets...

Mormons may look like the real thing, but they are only producing plastic!!

Mormons like to "keep up apperances". When I was dating my now wife and before I was saved I watched my mother in law throw a fit at home Sunday morning. She hated the family, nothing was going good. She was throwing things at family members, she was so mad. We then went to chruch 30 min. later (LDS church) where it was her turn to give the talk. I watched her stand up there and tell the church how blessed she was with a good family life and how beautiful her eternal family was, she even started crying. [IMG]

Keeping up apperances is important to Mormons. Mormon familys almost have two lifes one they show the out side world to show their "fruits" and the real one on the inside, that only close family can see. So familys and people here look at each other and think, why cant I be perfict like them/him/her, why is only my life a mess.

When the missionaries bring up the judge us by our fruits, and they always do. I like to then talk about the LDS churchs fairly new stance on abortion. They have become semi-pro-abortion and even endorse abortion in certan situations. Most Mormons dont know this and are shocked when confonted with it. There no coffee policy dosnt look so righteous when they are killing babies.

    They then change the subject.

We've kinda gotten away from the theme of the topic, but I must say that one problem with Mormons is that it's spelled with one too many "m"s.

The False Witlesses do basically the same thing. Their fruit, same as the LSD..er..LDS, is holly berries.

Just for the sake of discussion:
Some KJVO folks might claim the other translations are in and of themselves "False Prophets".
To me this would be twisting scripture as much as the "False Witlesses" do.

    I love that "False Witlesses"
Reminds me of a friend who called the Scribes and Pharisees "Scabs and Paracites"
Agree with the spelling of Mormon as well.

Where can a person get ahold of their new stance on abortion?

Don't some Mormons own Pepsico and now the Mormons drink Pepsi with caffeine in it?

</font>[/QUOTE]Mormons also own and operate casinos. It is okay to supply a lost world with their products to sin, but you cannot partake yourself.

One of the big casino operators that worked for Donald Trump in Atlantic city was killed in a helicopter crash a few years back....remember that? He was a STAUNCH Mormon.

Got lots of them in my wife's extended family. Believe me, we know what they believe. It would scare most people to death.

OH, wow, I'm a moderator and we are WAY off track.

Let's get back on and if you want to discuss Mormons any more, put it in the appropriate location and open a new thread. (Tell me where it is so I can join ya! haha)

As for Robycop's question about "fruit" and a certain Bible version, I have only heard that from one person and she hasn't been around for a long time now. ;)

While not wanting to advertise another site for free, you may see the 'fruits' concept used in the more active versions discussions around the Net.

As I said, it's just more gluing of feathers onto a hippo, hoping it'll fly.

Yes if someone applies the aforementioned verse to MV's it shows their lack of interpeting Scripture wisely. Another good example of misinterpetation by the same folks is Psalm 12:6-7.

Most all Mormons drink caffeine from pop. There are some very very few that dont but most only have a problem with coffee and tea because they are hot drinks. But then they also drink hot chocolate and soup. I cant figr em out. Only coffee and tea are prohibited, I have seen pepsi served at most LDS church functions even inside the church.

It would scare you to know what the LDS church ownes. But thats buisness and Mormons sepreate there money making from their religion.

I call the argument in the OP the "argument from blessing," and it is fallacious. The blessing of the Word of God comes from the truths in it as taught by the Holy Spirit, not from some magic effect it has based on the particular translation. If the truths are conveyed correctly in the receptor language, blessing will come.

Here is a story I've told before on the BB which is relevant here. I taught for eight years in Tokyo at a Bible institute (still teach by video there) where the dean, a friend of mine of course, was KJVO. He taught his Japanese students in one class, "God has preserved His Word in English in the KJV. The proof of that is that I was saved and called to preach through the KJV." This then became a test question. The students answered, "The Lord has preserved His Word in the English KJV, which we know since Missionary R. was saved and called to preach through the KJV. However, we were saved and called to preach through the Shinkaiyaku Bible, so we will use that!" The Shinkaiyaku is a conservative Japanese version based on Nestle's Greek text and the translation principles of the NASV. (There is no NT in print translated from the TR.)

Guess what? Those young Japanese men are today pastors, and are all godly, fundamental men who love the Lord and preach the Word! I saw several of them when I went back to Tokyo to preach last June, and one of them gave me a big hug (something Japanese simply don't do) and thanked me for my ministry! [IMG]
