Scripture teaches us to mark, expose, and separate from those who do not hold to the teaching of Scripture or who do not follow in biblical obedience (Rom 16:17-18; 2 Thess 3; 2 John, 3 John, 2 Peter, Jude, etc. etc. etc.). To be militant is not to be rude. It does not require a lack of tact. It requires a firm stand for the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

    Thanks PL,

I am saved almost 30 years and have been involved in Fundamental Baptist Churches since day 1. I only fear that sometimes militancy develops into a "brawler" attitude. Our militancy spreads into politics, sports, and other areas of life. How does one balance the requirement to expose with a quiet, loving spirit? Is it possible, and if so how, to be a "meek militant?"

It is also vital to remember militancy should come only over the fundamentals/essentials. In the non-essentials, grace prevails.

I for one, do not like the term "militant" as an adjective for Fundamentalism. I understand the way it was used historically in fundamentalism and I have no problem with that. Historically, it was used specifically to describe the battle with liberalism, which was a battle for the very heart of Christian belief. However, using it as a primary descriptor for our movement today before a lost world who do not understand what was meant by it historically is unwise. What comes to mind when we think of "militant muslims" or "militant feminists"? An unreasonable, mindless extremism comes to mind, that's what! And the world cringes at such descriptions. I don't want to be associated with that at all.

When Jesus comes to set up his kingdom, he will be militant. He will have a sword and he will smite his enemies. That methodology is not the methodology Christ is using in the world today and it is not the methodology we are called to use. It's time to retire the word "militant".

Maybe the term Fundamentalist should go with it, then. Everyone likes to be called a Fundamentalist, few actually live it.

I like the term "militant". Has a sense of "setting apart". [IMG]

Separatist is what a fundamentalist is.

Even New Evangelicals (however wide and meaningless that term has come to mean also) can hold to proper theology.

The difference is that we are willing to separate from those who are wrong.

SBC brings out a good point. We need to separate from those who do not hold to the Apostle's doctrine.

Militant? Yes. But the weapons of OUR warfare are not carnal nor is OUR armor.

I think meek is an excellent word to use (Maybe even perfect). I think that if the Savior is meek and fully victorious, then the soldiers should follow that example.

It's warfare against invisible forces. It's not done with knives, shotguns, fists or tanks etc.

Maybe it's done with love, prayer and knowledge.

I know the battlefield and the stentch of rotting corpses. I see a war that is close to home, there are victims and casualties all around. There is an enemy, but he is not man. If I think that my enemy is man then I have been tricked and my warfare is in vain.

I agree. The weapons of our warfare also are not name-calling and insults as some others would have us beleive. Thanks for your words of kindness and meekness.
