ALL of us should say when WE WERE SAVED! AMEN?

But I'm talking about the 4 Gospels. I always enjoy reading of the miracles of during the ministry of our lord, Jesus Christ - which one is your favorite?

    I'LL START:

"Peace, be still". You all know which one I mean! :D

    Well, two come to mind.

    1. The fact that God, manifest in the flesh, was born to a virgin.

    2. The fact that God died on the cross. It boggles my mind to think that God could die. But, He had the power to raise Himself back up again. That is truly a miracle. In this same miracle, it is miraculous that one sacrifice could atone for all the sins of every one of His children. To think, our burning in hell for all eternity still could not atone, but with Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, in a matter of hours, all of those sins had been wiped away.

Thank you, Jesus!!! I can not fathom how much you love me. But, even though I can't, I will always strive to prove myself worthy of your love.

I love the whole "tear up the roof drop your buddy from a rope" there are so many lessons to learn from these nameless devotees.

    AMEN Dr Bob! [IMG]

On the week before Easter Sunday I had privilege of taking Sunday school into the Church and doing the lesson there...Mainly because I needed the over-head projector ;) But anyway, in talking about Jesus' death I asked "What were some of the miracles the disciples saw Jesus do before that?"

The Pastor made mistake of giving me the cordless microphone, so after the kids in the front rows gave a batch of great answers I went for a 'Springer' style walk around the Church...(Although better theology than ol Jerry ;) )

So anyway, most of the miracles are listed when I get back down the front. I look at the Sunday school kids again and one of them finally says the words I was after "He forgave sins!" Tell you what folks, I almost did a quadruple somersault with 7¾ twists :D Now THAT would have been a sight :D

The Holy God forgiving even ONE sinner is the greatest of them all.

Back to topic at hand [IMG] Matthew 14:25-33 is one of my favourites, not because of Jesus walking on the water Himself, but calling Peter to join Him when Peter asked if He was the Lord.

I don't know why I like these events involving Peter so much... ;)

I like events involving Peter because I can relate to so many of them. At times, he was a faihful follower...at other times, he was not a faithful follower.

    But he ALWAYS repented...

I like the parable of Peter walking on the water. It is true that when he took his eyes off of Jesus, he sank...but we must also remember, Peter is the ONLY one who had enough faith to get out of the boat!

My favorite saying, "If you want to walk on the water...you've got to get out of the boat". [IMG]

Dr Bob.... sorry but the one I am most amazed by is not in the Gospels, it is what He does through (in spite of?) me.

It is the fact that God would take a nasty, drug abusing, ..... and call him to pastoral ministry. If He can change Paul and then me... Aint nobody He can't change.

The biggest miracle is each and every time He uses lowly old me to bring another person to the point of surrender to His glory.

One of my favorite miracles of the Lord can be found in Mark 9: 17-27. I love this "miracle" so much because of the Dad's reaction and response to the LORD - specifically verses 23-24. Jesus told the Dad that his son could be healed if the Dad would only believe (v23). Immediately, the Dad began to weep and cried out; "... Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief" (v24).

Amazingly, the Lord saved this dad's son DESPITE the man's admitted unbelief! This is TRULY an astounding message in the Bible. We all know that we MUST believe (that is a central article of our faith and in every Christian message). However, this miracle seems to suggest that one's belief can even be wobbly, and salvation is assured anyway.

Finally, I feel that this miracle illustrates perfectly what it means to be Saved by Grace (Eph. 2: 8). We are not saved by OUR faith but rather GOD's faith (Gal. 2: 16). This miracle seems to show this in action. [IMG] latterrain77

Since my first two choices have already been taken:

Empty tomb - And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. (1 Corinthians 15:14)

Lazarus - On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. (John 11:17) There are other miracles of bringing the dead back to life, both by Jesus and apostles, but Lazarus is unique in that the miracle overcame decay!

So I will add a new one:

blind man - John 9 - I like how Jesus progressively brought this man to a saving faith in Him, like he did with me. First Jesus gave him physical sight. Then I like how this man made fools of the Pharisees when they questioned him - "one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see" and "You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?" Now the man is confessing Jesus before men. And finally, Jesus gives him spiritual sight:

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. (John 9:35-38)

This may scare you, but we have the same favorite miracle. I love that text, and that prayer.

But do you really believe this miracle happened?? Or is this embellished imagination, a myth???

    Larry,

I was tempted to say "I believe, help my unbelief" but I thought that would be something of a cop out.

Yes, I believe it really happened. The fact that I appreciate biblical scholarship that questions the historicity of the biblical record doesn't mean that I personally reject the content of the gospels. I even believe in the virgin birth, although I don't consider it a terribly important component of the gospels.

The reason I ask is because in the past you have seemed to pick and choose which miracles are real and which are myth or allegory and you never gave us any objective basis on which you based your opinion. The closest you came was to say something regarding "centrality to the faith" which is why you asserted the validity of the resurrection. Since this miracle is not very central to the faith, I didn't know whether you believed it to be a myth or what.
