I appreciate the Phillips version . It is a great read . I realize it is not as exacting as a NASBU for instance , but it does convey the biblical message in a way that is stimulating . When Phillps came out with his NT it was startling to the Christian public . That was then . We are used to that kind of version these days .

I have his book " The Ring Of Truth " . I want to buy your God Is Too Small" and some others .

His most famous rendering is Romans 12:1,2 . With eyes wide open to the mercies of God , I beg you , my brothers , as an act of intelligent worship , to give him your bodies , as a living sacrifice , consecrated to him and acceptable by him . Don't let the world around you squeeze you into its mould , but let God re-make you so that your whole attitude of mind is changed . Thus you will prove in practice that the will of God's [ Yes, "God is" would have been better ]good , acceptable to him and perfect .

What I will do here is just give brief snatches do give you a sampling of his unique wording . I will not identify chapter and verse , just the book .

Matthew --Alas for the world and its pitfalls !

Mark -- It is the fit and flourishing who need the doctor , but those who are ill . I did not come to invite the righteous , but the sinners .

    Luke

    ...you little-faiths

These words reduced his opponents to shame , but the crowd was thrilled at all the glorious things he did .

[ I did not like the subject heading above the account f Lazarus and the rich man -- " Jesus shows the fearful consequences of social injustice ]

    John

And there was an undercurrent of discussion about him among the crowds .

    Acts

You obstinate people , heathen in your thinking , heathen in the way you are listening to me now !

They approached him in a body...

... got hold of some of the unprincipled loungers of the market-place .

... this craft of ours might fall into disrepute ...

... we have found this man a pestilential disturber of the peace ...

... it has been no hole-and-corner business .

    Romans

... they became fatuous in their argumentations .

... indeed , it is the straight-edge of the law that shows us how crooked we are .

    ... with undaunted faith ...

... rescued from the tyranny of change and decay .

... The truth is that we neither live noe die as self-contained units .

    1 Corinthians

... the prudence of the prudent will I reject

... the Greeks an intellectual panacea

... to explode the pretensions of the things that are

    ... crossing the sea dry-shod

    ... it is not touchy

... at present all I know is a little fraction of the truth

    ... you have a monopoly of God's truth ?

... every imposing defence that men erect
Our pride is not in matters beyond our proper sphere
... dishonest practitioners masquerading as the messengers of Christ
... I am sure you can smile tolerantly on a fool

... they are men who are palpable traitors to the truth
They will maintain a facade of religion

    Titus

... a man must be of unimpeachable virtue

    Hebrews

Surrounded then as we are by these serried ranks of witnesses , let us strip off everything that hinders us , as well as the sin which dogs our feet.

    1 Peter

He was guilty of no sin nor of the slightest prevarication .

    2 Peter

... But judgment has been for some time hard on their heels
It is not that he is dilatory about keeping his own promise
... indeed fully-developed love expels every particle of fear

I Corinthians 13:12: At present we are men looking at puzzling reflections in a mirror. The time will come when we shall see reality whole and face to face! At present all I know is a little fraction of the truth, but the time will come when I shall know it as fully as God now knows me!

I ran across the Phillips NT as a teenager and loved many of the renderings. (I've heard all the negatives about the translation, so please don't pile on.) I had grown up on the KJV and was looking at the NASB and the Living Bible (hey, I was young) and some of the phrases just jumped out at me and touched me like no other translation.

C.S. Lewis wrote the forward to Phillips' translation of the epistles and noted that sometimes we need to shocked out of "religious" language:

"And finally, though it may seem a sour paradox — we must sometimes get away from the Authorised Version, if for no other reason, simply because it is so beautiful and so solemn. Beauty exalts, but beauty so lulls. Early associations endear but they also confuse. Through that beautiful solemnity the transporting or horrifying realities of which the Book tells may come to us blunted and disarmed and we may only sigh with tranquil veneration when we ought to be burning with shame or struck dumb with terror or carried out of ourselves by ravishing hopes and adorations."

I didn't get my first copy of Phillips till October of last year . I just donated one of them to my church library . I don't know why I waited so long to get one . He has a refreshing way about the renderings .

I would agree with your post RSR . Some folks think they are very familiar with the Bible ( that is , specifically the KJV ) yet they may be missing a lot of things in their reading and study . If you are overly familiar with something there may be some blind-spots along the way .

The Phillps can get us to reexamine things a bit -- shake us and revitalize us .

Yep, that book took me a lot of time and was a lot of work. I'll be glad to autograph any copies for a nominal ten dollar handling fee. :D

JB signed it personally ? In the 40's ,50's ,60's or 70's ? Was it signed for him directly or for someone else whose copy Jim acquired ?

I'll have to ask Jim; it's been a while since he told me.

I really enjoy this version. I used to have a borrowed copy but I returned it. I'm planning on purchasing my own copy very soon.

Those who do not have access to a paper copy may be interested in knowing that Phillips' New Testament is now available on CCEL.
