Where do we get the idea that God "calls" us to certain vocations? I see in the Scriptures that God has called us to salvation and to serve Him, but I haven't been able to find references to vocation. Are we "called" to specific vocations, or are we just "called" to serve God in our vocations?

    Follow Me:

As far as scripture about calling us to be a grocery store manager, insurance salesman, etc. I don't think there is such a thing.... but the above verses say Follow Me and our gifts which are to be used for service to God but not normal everyday vocations.

I don't even really think God "calls" people into the ministry, though I hold a minority view on that. Though I do believe God is working and moving people into place to fulfill His perfect plan. I just believe "if someone desires the office of oversear, he desires a good thing" (paraphased from memory, no specific version)

I am in the minority...I agree with Pete....I agree that God gives us desires and fulfills His sovereign plan...There is no magical calling, but more of a heart desire...I do believe in God's providence...He accomplishes what we wants to.

There is a distinct and effective calling of God by His Spirit to the heart of every one of His elect for SALVATION. By it we are wooed, regenerated, given repentance and faith, and become a child of God.

Why would this "modus operandi" change, then, when it comes to the distinct and effective calling of God by His Spirit to the heart of every one of His elect for MINISTRY? By it we are wooed and led and God implants a gift of ministry for His church within the child of God.

Since the steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord, I personally believe that God calls and leads us to our vocation and our ministry.
