    hi.

i like music that boldly talks about our lord jesus and biblical issues/morality in general. a decent example would be Steven Curtis Chapman's Declaration. a lot of CCM that i've picked at random sounds like it could just as well be about zeus or somebody's girfriend - it takes a bit of work to see if it's about jesus at all. it seems like a lot of christian music would be better labelled "not particularly offensive music that often can be interpreted as talking about god".

anyway, please give your recommendations for music that is heavily focused on the lord and his word.

    thanks!

I have that CD. I really, really, really, like it.

I also like Michael W. Smith. Still remains one of my favorites is Ray Boltz anything he sings.

Depends on your style. Something really unusual, I've found that often times the songs with the harder styles are the ones with the better, bolder lyrics. Best...lyrical...band...ever...O.C. Supertones. However, they're ska, so depending on your musical preferences you might not like them. Skillet is also pretty good, though a little cryptic at times, they're obviously not singing about a girlfriend. If you like the harder stuff, you could try Disciple, some consider them one of the best Christian metal bands ever.

    disciple lyrics:

    1. By God

V1 - Bring out the best in me which is nothing less than your holiness (Romans 6:22) manifest your power in me (2 Corinthians 4:10) and I'll be a vessel of your glory (2 Timothy 2:21) I lay me down let it rise up in my soul (1 John 3:16) I'm falling down so you pick me up again (Jude 24) God tear it down the walls that the enemy built around me (Jeremiah 51:58) Send your spirit down, where the Spirit is there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17)

B - Oh God, without you I can do nothing (John 15:5) By God, I can do all things (Philippians 4:13)

B2 - It should've been my hands It should've been my cross It should've been my nails that pierced your skin (Isaiah 53:5, 1 John 3:5, 4:10) so I deny myself and I take up my cross to follow you, oh yeah (Luke 9:23)

C - It's not about me for by grace I was saved by God (Ephesians 2:8) And I am not mine, I was bought with a price by God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) And I will live by every word from His mouth by God (Deuteronomy 8:3, Luke 4:4) He won't back down, push and you get pushed back by God (Psalm 44:5, Galatians 6:7)

V2 - I open up my mouth, fill it with the word of God (Psalm 81:10) when I reach out my hand, Lord may it have your healing (Acts 4:30, 1 Corinthians 12:9) Lord bring it down, release your power once again (1 Corinthians 2:4- 5) anoint our hands to do the works that you once did (John 14:12) Lord our desire is for the spiritual gifts of God (1 Corinthians 14:1) Let the children prophesy your wonderful works Lord (Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17)

    ----

    2. Not rock stars

V1 - I am just a man with as many problems as anyone who has lived (Romans 3:23) And I have faced temptations, some I pass and some I fail (1 Corinthians 10:13) I know what it's like to be on the mountain, and in the deep abyss (Philippians 4:12) And I know what it's like to be rescued from the stronghold of hell (Psalm 35:17)

When I have not humbled myself God has humbled me (Isaiah 10:33) and I'm so far from knowing it all cause He's still teaching me (1 Corinthians 13:12) But I want to share the love He gave so we all could be not of this world, not of this world (John 18:36)

C - Servants of the Most High (Psalm 47:2) not rock stars (2 Corinthians 5:20) New creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) not rock stars

V2 - We are meant to be examples and not idols to be praised (1 Timothy 4:12) We are just one of the many parts of the body of God (1 Corinthians 12:12) We're not here for our own glory, we're not here to steal from you (Ephesians 3:21) But our prayer from our heart is that you'll find God and see the truth (John 17:17)

There is something greater than anything that money can buy the privilege and the honor to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:8) and we want to share the love He gave so we all could be not of this world, not of this world (John 17:16)

    ---

wow. yes, this is certainly the sort of thing i want, lyrically.

I'd strongly suggest anything by Wes King or Michael Card. Most of the late, lamented WhiteHeart's music had very strong Biblical themes.

Also, check out Buddy Greene. His new album isn't a strictly Gospel one, but his others are.

Ritchie Furay (POCO, Buffalo Springfield, Souther Hillman & Furay Band, Eagles, etc), who's now a full time pastor, has a great Gospel album out called "In My Father's House".

Peter Mayer's last couple of albums were Gospel albums that I'd recommend to any one, especially adults trying to escape teen oriented CCM.

    Same with Randy Stonehill.

Mike, did you know Randy Stonehill is gonna be at Creation with Larry Norman? I've never heard Randy, is his stuff similar to Norman's?

One song that is really interesting from Disciple is I Just Know:

I just know Jesus is the way
I just know Jesus is the truth
I just know Jesus is the life
I know that Jesus is my God (John 14:6)

what makes you different from one another
why do you argue about who you follow
there is no man that you belong to
there's only one God that can claim you (1 Corinthians 3:5-7)
    I don't care if you don't speak in tongues (1 Corinthians 13:1)
    I don't care if you're into submersion (Matthew 3:16)
what does it matter if wear a liturgical robe
or prophesy and say God said so (1 John 4:1)

I just know Jesus is the way
I just know Jesus is the truth
I just know Jesus is the life
I know that Jesus is my God (John 14:6)

    do you serve your name
    or do you serve mankind
    would you feel the same
if they took down your sign
could you sit next to me
if I was Baptist or Presbyterian
or do I need to be
a charismatic or Episcopalian (Acts 2:17)
I don't care if you drink grape juice or if it's wine (Matthew 26:27- 29)
and I don't care if you get out of church on time
what does it matter if you praise God with music in your church (Psalm 150)
or you burn your dead or bury them six feet in the dirt

    CHORUS

I don't care if you clap your hands (Psalm 47:1)
I don't care if you get out in the aisle and dance (Psalm 149:3)
what's it matter if someone lets out a hallelujah shout (Psalm 100:1)
have we forgotten what praising Yahweh is all about

    CHORUS 2x

A striking criticism of the divisions in our church today. One thing about Disciple, they're not afraid to preach. :D Their style takes a lot of getting used to if you don't usually listen to metal, but it's worth it for the lyrics.

    Hey Jonathan,

I didn't know ther were going to be at Creation. I know that they used to tour and record quite a bit back in the 70's until they had a falling out and didn't speak to one another until recently, when Larry Norman was having his health problems. How he's still able to play anywhere, I have no idea, but I'm glad he's OK now.

Norman was a little before my time so, other than a couple of songs here or there, I don't really know much about him.

What I've heard of his tends to be more 60's folk, like John Denver or Phil Ochs.

Stonehill runs the gammut from Elvis Costello-type New Wave to Jimmy Buffett/Lyle Lovett singer-songwriter, Texas type folk.

His songs tend to be either very satirical ("Barbie Nation" and "Great Big Stupid World" are side splittingly funny) to very poignant, like "Lantern in the Snow", "I was Only Sleeping" or "Christmas at Denny's".

Check him out if you get a chance. He's one of the few artists in any style of music that I've never heard anybody say they didn't like.

I'd second this. Delirious is a great band, along the musical style of U2/Oasis. I've never really considered them "hard," but they aren't hymns either. Check out The Cutting Edge or Glo albums if you're interested.

Now I'm sorry but I have to "take you all to school" on this issue of which Christian artists to listen to.

    Alternative Rock: The Benjamin Gate
    Alternative Pop: Rebecca St James
    College Folk/Female Angst: Jennifer Knapp
    Adult Contemporary: Twila Paris
    Rap/Roc: POD
    Metal: Black Sabbath, or Megadeth

If you can find them, check out Jacob's Trouble, particularly their first indie release (very hard to find but very good), "Door Into Summer". Their last album with the classic lineup, "Let the Truth Run Wild" is also very good.

Love the mellow works of John Michael Talbot. 100% scripture, so you won't find a stronger Bible content.

More in the mainstream of CCM was Steve Green - again, the content was rich and melodies you could sing and not be drowned by the beat.

(Obviously not a big CCM fan - thank God for Bach! Think I was just born a coupla hundred years too late . . :D )

Ahhh Jonathan, thank you ever so much for posting those lyrics, I love it when artists are so bold and write things that just knock us off our spiritual high horses to reality. Larry Norman was a good one for that as was Keith Green (sadly missed)

I listen to anything that I can find a passionate message in. Music wise I don't much care for southern gospel or hymns with slow, mellow music, not saying there's sin in it, just don't like it myself.

    CCM with strong biblical messages?

hmmmm let me think...Keith Green did Holy Holy Holy, Phil Keaggy did a terrible version of Be Thou My Vision, Petra did the Hallelujah Chorus on an old live release and Amazing Grace on a CD from a year or two ago...ummm...I miss any? ;)

Ok ok, I'll get serious for a minute...Keith Green on a good day was hard to top. Bob Hartman (Petra) can write a solid one when he likes too.

Bruce Carroll is very understandable. Good Music.

Phillips, Craig & Dean (spelling?) newest cd. My 9 and 12 year old love it.

Ah, Steve Green. What a wonderful voice.

It's not a CCM song, but has anyone heard Richard Marx's "Take This Heart"?

It has an overwhelmingly Biblical message. The guy who wrote it said that the "I" in the song was originally written to represent Jesus but that the producers changed in slightly in the studio when Marx recorded it to reflect a more generic love song type of song. To me, it's done very little to diminish the original meaning of the song.

I cannot stop listening to _Revival in Belfast_, and the sequel: _Come Heal This Land_. Robin Mark is amazing. Brother Enda, have you ever seen him?

Since I am offering Irish music, I love Maire Brennan's _Perfect Time._ Bear in mind that Maire is Roman Catholic, but several songs on the disc are very good.

I assume you're a fan of Larry Norman? If you like his best-known work like the Trilogy, then it is definitely worth your while to search out some of Stonehill's work from the same period, notably Get Me Outta Hollywood and especially Welcome to Paradise, which Larry finally released on CD last year.

But don't overlook his more current work either. Wonderama was good. There's a live/studio album called Till We Have Wings which gives you a taste of what Randy is like in concert (the studio side isn't bad either). I've liked some of his most recent songs that I've heard on the radio, too, like "Father of Lights."

Can we count P/W in a CCM thread? [IMG]

Baptist in Richmond, have you got the Mandate: All For Jesus CD? Pretty good mix of songs on that one. I love the version of When I Survey played on it, I played it that way a few times at old Church.

Saw a new Mandate CD in bookshop the other week, I glanced at the back cover and think that might be my early Christmas present to myself [IMG]
