    Isaiah 1-3

1:4 they are gone away backwards

    given to corruption

    1:13 vain oblations

    meaningless offerings

1:14 they are a trouble unto me

They have become a burdon to me

1:24 I will ease me of mine adversaries

I will vent my wrath on my foes

1:29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired , and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen .

You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted ; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen .

1:31 the strong shall be as tow

the mighty man will become tinder

2:6 they please themselves in the children of strangers

    clasp hands with pagans

2:9 the mean man boweth down

    people will be brought low

    2:16 upon all pleasant pictures

    every stately vessel

3:1 the stay and the staff

    both supply and support

    3:3 the eloquent orator

    clever enchanter

3:4 babes shall rule over them

    children will govern them

    3:7 I will not be a healer

    I have no remedy

3:8 to provoke the eyes of his glory

    defying his glorious presence

3:10 they shall eat the fruit of their doings

they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds

3:12 destroy the way of the paths

they turn you from the path

3:17 the Lord will discover their secret parts

the Lord will make their scalps bald

3:18 their cauls , and their round tires like the moon

    crescent necklaces

3:24 instead of a girdle a rent ... a stomacher ... burning instead of beauty

instead of a sash , a rope ... instead of fine clothing , sackcloth ... instead of beauty , branding

    5:13 they have no knowledge

    for lack of understanding

5:14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself , and openeth her mouth without measure

Therefore the grave enlarges its appetite and opens wide its mouth

5:17 Then shall lambs feed after their manner , and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat .

Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture ; lambs will feed among the ruins of the rich .

5:18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity

Woe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit

    5:19 Let him make speed

    Let God hurry

    5:21 prudent

5:23 take away the righteousness of the righteous from him

5:26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from afar , and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth .

He lifts up a banner for the distant nations , he whistles for those at the ends of the earth .

7:4 neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands

Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood

7:20 the hair of the feet

    the hair of your legs

7:25 the treading of lesser cattle

    where sheep run

    8:9 Associate yourselves

    Raise the war cry

    8:12 confederacy

    distressed and hungry

    9:1 the dimness

    gloom

9:8 it hath lighted on Israel .

it will fall on Israel .

9:12 his hand is stretched out ( same terminology in 9:17 , and 10:4 )

    his hand is still upraised

Ironic- I read the passage in Isa. 8:21 today and was wondering what 'bestead' meant. I underlined it to look up later and here is this post from Rippon.

Providential -- God works that way . That's neat ( is that an archaic word these days ?) Mexdeaf . One should not have to use a special decoder ring to understand something written in their own language , supposedly . Thank the Lord for newer versions which communicate in today's language and yet are faithful to the original .

I thought that there were a number of verses in my last post , citing phrases from chapters 16-24 , which were particulary difficult in the KJV . Take another look at 17:10 ; 18:2 ; 21:14 ; 23:10 ; and 24:15 for examples .

The point is that there are archaic words when we read 17th century English.

Something I don't think anyone would dispute.

I think your point is well made Rippon
