My parents pastor pushes this college. These excerpts were taken from their 2003-2004 Catalog:

Golden State Baptist College is unashamedly an independent, fundamental, soul-winning, seperated, Baptist college. Thus GSBC is not intended to be merely baptistic. Students who wish to be accepted at GSBC must come from a church of like faith and practice. We want to make it very clear to all of our students where we stand; therefore we will not be able to accept charismatic, "Bible" church, "Christian" church, non-denominational, or inter-denominational students.

The King James Version is the only English-language Bible that will be permitted on campus.

The 66 books of the OT and NT are the complete and divine revelation of God to man. The Scriptures shall be interpeted according to their normal garmmatical-historical meaning. The King James Version of the Bible shall be the official and only English-language translation used by GSBC).
Your parents have to be members of IFB church or else they will not let you in if you use a differant version but agree with them on all issue's. I disagree with several of their policies but I could live with them except for the version issue.

Do they not seem hypocritical they say only 66 books are Inspired yet they use a version that origianlly had 80 books and considered it Holy Scripture.

Kind of sounds like inbreeding to me. Do they also subscribe to the same theology as the translators or do they deviate there.

Though I disagree with their policies, at least they are straightforward and don't try to cover them up like other institutions. That is appreciated and respected.

I would have had problems getting into this school, because my Mother was dead and my Father is a member of a United Presbyterian USA church. Me, I was saved through the ministry of and baptized in a IFB church at 19. And for the next five years was a member of IFB churchs. (I was in the USCG for four of those years and was stationed from Astoria, Ore to Cape Cod, Mass.)

As for their version statement, it is not as far out in the cornfield as you might think. If you read it at face value.

I believe its wrong for a college not to allow you to bring whatever version you like. I can understand using the KJV in papers and all official school work, but I think a college should allow you to bring your own version.Even PCC allows you to bring another version for personal devotions and Bible reading/study.

Another "sham" indoctrinational school of the hylesish type, masquerading as a college and giving a black eye to real Christian education.

    Dr. Bob,

Why is it that when a college takes a stand on the KJV, they are branded as a "sham" or a "Hylish" school. Golden State is neither of these. They are a Baptist school which is teaching young people to serve God.

I am beginning to think by your posts, that you are an extremely liberal Preacher who would not hold to Scripture teaches. Of course you would immediately call me a legalist. What liberal schools do you recommend to those who come to this board. How about Liberty? Cedarville? Maranatha? Northland? Please enlighten us on the "better Christian Colleges".

Pastor J - its not just taking a "stand". Its taking the stand that the King James Version is the only valid English translation.

If you ever took a foreign language, you would learn that there is more than one valid way to translate a phrase from one language to another. That alone shows the KJV only position to be false.

It is with amusement that I notice you call Dr. Bob "liberal". Your use of the word "liberal" apparantly means anybody who disagrees with your theology in any way. Please be aware that in so using the word that way you remove it from any true usefulness in describing theological positions.

Taking a dogmatic stance on ignorance is very dangerous. That is like the blind leading the blind thinking they can see.

    Paul,

I use the term "Liberal" because every post Dr. Bob makes regarding a solid Christian College is to bash them. I am curious as to which colleges Dr. Bob recommends. I would bet that the colleges he recommends have absolutely no standards and are no different than a secular university.

If it sounds like I am irritated, it is because I am. We complain that PCC has attacked other institutions, yet, Dr. Bob makes an unsubstantiated attack and we praise him for it.

As far as the translations are concerned. I understand that there can be various differences in translations. The issue is the text itself. That is for a different forum.

Dr. Bob in my opinion has more insight into good colleges than most anybody I know. History has shown that these strong IFB/KJV Only schools take their enforcement of standards too far. Keeping everyone in line with their standards becomes the driving force of the school. I was an IFB for years and I was KJV only. I have the highest respect for KJV Only men of God. But when a young person goes to college they don't need to be beat to death with standards that are just overkill and not Biblical. They need to be taught to teach/preach the Word of God unashamedly and with corectness. Teach modesty that is necessary but don't link being a sold out Christian with the way a person dresses or what translation of the Scriptures they use. My two cents.

I agree with you that sometimes rules go overboard. I don't agree with every rule that PCC or other like institutions place on their kids. What those rules do do is they teach you character to not complain about rules in your life. The rules usually have a very good reason behind them. There are rules in life that aren't Biblical, yet you have to abide by them. I have no problem with people not liking one school or another for a good reason. The reasons that have been given both in this thread and the PCC thread for bashing these two fine schools is pathetic.

I generally agree Pastor J. I really do oppose school bashing. Each family should pray, look into it, ask alumni, the make a decision. Once the decision is made just obey the rules. If you don't like it either get over it or transfer. I think bashing schools give students fuel for their fire and negatively affects their attitudes.

I know many folks who have gone off to PCC/BJU etc. and received a good education. They are now faithfully serving the Lord. If any one would feel like the Lord is calling them to PCC/BJU etc. I would never try to talk them out of it. They just need to know what awaits them. I do believe if you choose a school with very high standards of dress, music, etc. and you know that is where the Lord has placed you, you must abide by those standards or find another college. I pray that our IFB schools continue to turn out solidly grounded men and women. God Bless you Pastor J.

It should be pointed out that neither PCC nor BJU is a baptist school, let alone IFB. Both schools, while they do enroll many Baptists (in particular IFBs), are by their charters non-denominational.
