Why does law enforcement, fireprevention, military, boy scouts, girl scouts, sports teams, employers, private schools require that those that participate, work or what have you where uniforms?

Don't uniforms signfy to what group they belong. If you were one of the above would you refuse to conform to the image specified?

Professing Christians seem to have a difficult time with the image that God has laid out in the scriptures.

1Co 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

Yet you insist that all the women here should wear your uniform or be judged as a bad christian who needs to get to work earning God's love.
Funny that you should mention it.
    edited for bad spelling.

I am an auxillary policeman, hired by the police department, as a school crossing guard and I don't wear a uniform.

In the organizations you mentioned above, you know going in that you will be required to wear a uniform and most are furnished for you.

Unfortunately, the Bible is not as clear other than to say 'dress modestly'.

I still maintain it is the job of the Holy Spirit to convict us of what is 'modest' and what is not. It is not up to a person to tell us.....call it what you want, it becomes legalism when ANYONE tries to take over God's job...

Yes, that is how we rocognize them by their uniform. I know for a fact if you are in the military and you refuse to submit to the uniform requirements you could end up in jail.

When I was in the military the dress requirements were very strick. There is actually an entire book written that spells out what is required of military members in their dress code.

So when you see a military member you know right away that he/she is a military member. You can't see in to his heart whether or not he is a military member, you know right away by his uniform.

Oddly enough, I don't see too many "uniform requirements" listed in Scripture.

Modest apparrel is NOT a uniform or in any way parallel to police/military.

Hair length for women/men is NOT a uniform nor in any way parallel to police/military.

PHARISEES wore all sorts of spiritual garb and accutrements so they would APPEAR spiritual to the casual observer. Stopped and prayed in every intersection, blocking traffic.

We know what Jesus said about that mind-set.

    THEY HAVE THEIR REWARD.

Did the early Christians wear a uniform? Would you have necessarily been able to pick them out of a crowd?

If cops didn't wear uniforms how would we know who they were?
It becomes a uniform when someone dictates to you what you should be wearing, so that yu look like them, all should be dressed the same as eachother, then uses the threat of public reticule as punishment if you do not do as they say.
    Sounds like legalism to me.
again edited to correct spelling, I have letters not visiable on all my keys.

Are you saying that Christian schools who mandate uniforms are legalists?

Absolutely - they require a certain clothing, etc, they are "legalists". Army is, Navy is, police force is, fire department is.

Legalism is following a set of rules to live by instead of our own free will. If a church says women must wear "xyz", they HAVE that right . . but they ARE legalistic. Nothing wrong with that.

Now if they say you will be MORE SPIRITUAL when you follow that code, THEN they are spiritual legalists and that is where the problem comes in.

Trying to gain/keep favor with God by outward set of man-made codes is EVIL, spiritual legalism.

Example of "good" legalism. My college said men could not have facial hair. Their rule for hair length said "off the ears". That is legalism.

But it is "institutional" legalism and if I want to attend that school, I must submit my freedom of choice in those areas to the policy of the school.

    Nothing right/wrong about it.

When I graduated I grew a moustache and longer sideburns (mutton chops - hey, it was 1970) and when I saw a prof I asked him what he thought about it.

"No big deal. You're out of school. You choose the way you want to look." I found there was NOTHING SPIRITUAL about that uniform code of hair. Just an institutional decision for uniformity of students on campus.

I thought I was rebelling by growing it out afterwards. In reality, a moustache has NOTHING TO DO with spirituality. It was just a code for a certain time period.

I guess that would be legalism since the Bible says men should have facial hair. ;)

As a graduate a private Christian school that had uniforms the subject came up OFTEN.

Actually, I attended 2 different private Christian high schools.

At the first one the uniform was normal ACE standards.
Girls: Red or Blue jumper or Skirt, Red, White, or Blue Shirt, and Red, White, or Blue Vest/Sweater.
Boys: Red or Blue dockers type pants, Red, White, or Blue Shirt, and Red, White or Blue Vest/Sweater and a Tie.

At the second school the uniform changed a bit.
Girls: Navy or Khaki Skirt or dockers type pants, White or Lt. Blue Shirt and if weather warranted a sweater in your choice of color.
Boys: Navy or Khaki dockers type of pants, White or Lt. Blue Shirt and again, if weather warranted a sweater in your choice of color.

Neither school had a set "uniform" as to style or fabric. That was where we were free to be individuals. The second school let us be individuals by allowing us our choice in sweaters/sweater vests-hey, it was the 80's-and boy did we have some interesting sweaters going on. :D

At both schools, the reasons given for a uniform vs. "street clothes" was: Better behavior from students and no "keeping up with the Joneses". Same reasons that alot of public schools now have a uniform policy.

How's this for a "uniform" for believers?

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

If love is our uniform, how many visitors to these threads know that we are His disciples?

Our local Christian school does not have uniforms. Not many Christian can afford tuition and expensive uniforms. Well as a matter of fact not many Christians can afford private schooling. Which adequately separates them from poor Christians.

There is a Christian school down the road from where I live, not sure if they have uniforms or not.

So far, all the school districts that we have lived in have had an "opt-out" form for school uniforms. Which, unitl it is made "mandatory" we will continue to opt out of.

I understand why they want the uniforms, just having gone to schools with them, I don't fully agree with the idea.

And I agree with you, by the time you pay the tuition, and buy the books, uniforms are not easily afforded by some.

Dina, if my kids had had to have uniforms they wouldn't have been able to go to school.

Thank you Dina, you may also pm if for anything.
Thankfully we are much better now, we aren't well off,and still have problems making sure the money stretches, but it's easier, and the big thing now is we have the Lord, things always work out.

Funny, the schools I went to had uniforms partly so that one could not tell the rich from the poor. It costs no more to buy a school uniform than it does to buy regular street clothes.

It sounds to me like Central Kentucky is a very depressed area of the country. Never having been there, I haven't a clue, but that is the picture I am getting.

We have poor folks, but nothing in a concentrated area like Central Kentucky. I think I would move away where there are more opportunites.

    Cheers,

    Jim
