    Becky -

Look at the book of Jude.

    vs 6 and 7
"And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great day. In a similiar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire."

The Greek translates, word for word, as "angels and not having kept the of themselves rule but having deserted their own habitation for the judgment of the great day bonds in everlasting under gloom he has kep as Sodom and Gomorra and the round them cities, in the like manner to these committing fornication and going away after flesh different are set forth an example fire of eternal vengeance undergoing."

If you mean that the KJV doesn't say that the lake of fire is eternal look at Jude 7.

KJV reads "Even as Soddom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."

If you are saying hell isn't Gehenna - that's a different discussion.

Christ described the place of everlasting punishment as Gehenna in
Matthew 5:22 “...whosoever shall say, “Thou fool”, shall be in danger of hell fire” (gehenna of the fire).

Matthew 5:29 “And if thy right eye offend thee ... and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell” (gehenna).

Matthew 5:30 “And if thy right hand offend thee ... and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell” (gehenna).

Matthew 10:28 “...fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (gehenna).

Matthew 18:9 “And if thine eye offend thee, ... rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire” (gehenna).

Matthew 23:15 “Pharisees, ... ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (gehenna)

Matthew 23:33 “Ye serpents,... how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (gehenna).

Mark 9:43 “And if thy hand offend thee, ... two hands to go into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched.” (gehenna)

Mark 9:45 “And if thy foot offend thee, ... two feet to be cast into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched.” (gehenna),

Mark 9:47 “And if thine eye offend thee, ... two eyes to be cast into hell fire” (gehenna of fire).

Luke 12:5 “Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell” (gehenna).

James 3:6 “the tongue is ... set on fire of hell” (set on fire by gehenna).

Hades shows up about 10 times and is ususally translated the same way Hebrew Sheol is - as grave.

Matthew 11:23 “Thou, Capernaum...shalt be brought down to hell” (hades).

Luke 10:15 "And thou, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell."

Matthew 16:18 “The gates of hell (hades) shall not prevail against it”.

Luke 16:19-31 “And in hell (hades) he lifted up his eyes, being in torments (punishment)”

Acts 2:27 “Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (hades).”

Acts 2:31 “That his (Christ's) soul was not left in hell (hades).”

Revelation 1:18 “I (Christ) ... have the keys of hell (hades) and of death.”

Revelation 6:8 “a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and hell (hades) followed with him.”

Revelation 20:13 “.. death and hell (hades) delivered up the dead which were in them.”

Revelation 20:14 “death and hell (hades) were cast into the lake of fire.”

One weakness of the KJV is that it doesn't distinguish between sheol, hades, tartarus, and gehenna, generically calling all of them "hell". While several newer versions sometimes leave those words untranslated, the readers known they ARE different places, and if they really STUDYING the Bible, they'll be stimulated to look up the definition of each.

This issue concerning the eternal duration of hell came up in another thread.

There is an element within Baptists (Primitive Baptists) who are called "no-hellers".

It seems that even among Baptists there are Trinitarian Universalists (much to my surprise when I first read of them).

Actually it is a misnomer, they do believe in hell. They do not believe it is eternal but a place where eventually all within will come to know Jesus Christ as Savior.

So, your friend might be a Primitive Baptist "no-heller".

They don't have much to support their unscriptural position and meet with disapproval even from other Primitive Baptists.

I don't think Jude is talking about the lake of fire. That would be referring to the fire that rained down on them, or at most the fire of hell. No one is suffering in the lake of fire at this time.

And no, I'm not saying hell isn't Gehenna. I'm saying Gehenna is hell, and it is not the lake of fire as many suggest.

Please clarify. Are you saying gehenna is hades? If the LOF isn't hell, is it anything else but the LOF?

I am saying that gehenna and hades are the same place, possibly gehenna may refer exclusively to the nastier business in hell, but that they are both referring to the holding place for the dead until the judgment.

As to the lake of fire, by anything else do you mean is it referred to in the bible by another name? I think it is.
