While I do think that we should tithe, I don't know if it's actually a compulsory teaching. Here's why:

There are three types of laws in the OT. Rabbinical, moral, and civil. Rabbinical and civil laws are no longer in effect. Moral laws, however are. Ththing is not a rabbinnical law. In fact, it doesn't appear to fall into the category of laws at all. Rather, it falls into the category of OT customs and practices that have spiritual benefit. Even if we presume that tithing is indeed an ot law, it is not a moral law (the only body of laws that is still in effect).

Now, that said, while I don't think tithing is mandatory, I do think tithing is appropriate. I think all people of religious faiths should tithe and give regularly. However, I do not have the spiritual authority to say that one must tithe, or that not tithing is a sin.

But why say "you think it is appropriate"?

Hello Friends. Kinda new here. Seems to me, Buckster, the temple is the parallel to the NT believer when you consider the Lord filling His church (Matthew 18 "two or three...midst") much as He did in the Old Testament Temple with His Glory!

Also, consider 2 Choronicles 5 and Acts 2 together and you see the glory filling Solomon's temple in the former reference being a type of the Holy Spirit filling the church at Pentecost.

Point is, the Levite, who was to be supported by the tithe, is he who works and serves in the temple. Is not every believer to do such a thing? Is not every believer a Priest in a kingdom of Priests? So, who supports the believer pictured by the Levite with the tithe? I guess you see my point, my dear brothers.

I think we as Christians have a moral obligation to help God's Kingdom on earth. That is, we have an obligation to support the poor, the needy, etc. We also have an obligation to support our church. Every time we sit in a pew, it costs the church money and resources. Hence, I think it's appropriate that we use our time, our finances, and our talents to contribute to these things. Mandatory? No. Appropriate, yes.

Imagine if I have a friend who always offers to pay for lunch when we go out. It would be morally appropriate for me to return the favor and buy him lunch. Likewise, one shouldn't go through the world riding God's free lunch. When much is given to us, much is expected of us.

  6. I think what John means by appropriate, is it makes sense that God gave us everything we have. He gave us our health, our brains , our abilities and blessings. That it is only RIGHT to give back a portion to him to show him our FAITH and THANKFULLNESS for all he has given us

  7. OK John you posted when I did. Ok those were some other good points. To help our society, pastors and church. I am all in favor of that I do it all the time.

I agree 100% but if we use a term of the law people are going to get confused by that. If some one has prayed and God leads them to 10% fine but the cheerful giver is what I think we need to shoot for. I know some poor who can not do it and it is not an excuse.

Laugh of the day for me when someone called me:

"You are a liberalist or modernist plain and simple."

I guess reading and seeking and being led by the spirit to our belief makes me a liberal if it goes agains someone tradition. I guess us Bible readers which allow the Spirit to show us what it is saying are the new liberals. There is a danger out there called "mainstream Baptist". I guess the new liberal is the true consevitive. You will find in this "mainstream" a moving standard not the rock of Scripture. You will have your women pastors and deacons. Then homosexuallity will be ok next. They might as well take "church" off their sign. They are not called out they have called the world in. We can't even get to grace because we are blinded by legalistic traditions.

Show me where it says you shouldn't.

I have shown you scripture after scripture.

If tithing wasn't a commandment why did Jesus bring it up in a parable? (Luke 18:11-12) Regardless if the parable was detailing the guy in the wrong or not. The fact is he still brought it up.

  12. I already answered that one Duhhh Luke 18:11-12 has nothing to do with tithing.

Quit acting like a Liberal and show me where in the NT you will find that we must Tithe
better yet find the word TITHE in the NT other than the lame one you just mentioned ?

    Buckster,

You referred to me as a legalist.

Well if I am a legalist for telling the truth then fine. Most of you taking this view are NOT putting Jesus first. We msut all my brothers learn to put Jesus first in our lives. One of the ways of doing this is through tithes.

You also think I grew up being taught this way. Actually I grew up in a church teaching what you guys taught, and I started to research the bible and taking it for what it says and found out different for myself. The bible states what it states. My bible tells me I should tithe my 10% or more.

Most of you are blinded by liberalistic views on this subject. Most of you are wrong plain and simple.

However, each of you are still my brothers and I respect you. I will pray that my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will show you the proper way and take the blinds off you currently have.

Show me in the NT where it says we should not tithe...

  15. You ACT like a Liberal when you try to spin everyting. But you are very legalistic when you try to push your beliefs on everyone else. You cannot find anywhere in the NT that we must tithe if it was so important then Jesus and Paul would have said something. Sorry but I'm with Buster you are a legalist

  16. faithtrustbelief writes.... Show me in the Bible where we are asked not to tithe?

HOW OLD ARE YOU ? Five ?

Ok, my point again is, If tithing is for today, the circumstances surrounding tithing should also be the same. In other words, tithing, according to the passages on Melchizadek (pre-law) and Leviticus (law) was for the support of those who work in the tabernacle/temple which is a picture of the church. Again, this is fulfilled twice: First, the church is the temple of God (as seen in my first post). Second, we are a kingdom of priests as seen in 1 Peter and Revelation 1. No matter how you look at this thing, if tithing is for today, saved folks are the ones who are to be supported by the tithe...so, if this is the case, who expects the lost, unredeemed world, Jew or Gentile, to tithe for our livlihood? Thanks
