Personally, I think coffee is evil , because it is nothing but an excuse to get a 'fix' of caffeine!!! The Dite Mountain Dew(R) I drink, on the other hand...

LOL - Nah - I've never done this myself. But it's a great activity for the youth group!!

And, I have to admit, it was more like 1/2 glass (about 2 oz., I think). It actually really DID help the migrane after 2 days of 800 mg. ibuprophen every 6 hours didn't even touch it. Bleck!!

Personally, as someone who was addicted to caffeine pills earlier in life, I can testify that caffeine definitely has addictive qualities. I've seen way too many people in life who cannot "get going" in the morning until they have consumed their cup of coffee. I've seen too many people who have headaches if they have not drank anything with caffeine in a while. Those are addicts (although not to the level that I was at...)

I would make the argument that those who believe in complete abstinence of alcohol should also believe in complete abstinence of caffeine, if they are to be logically consistant. If one believes that caffeine used wisely is appropriate, then they should take alcohol the same way, as permissible, when used in small doses.

And then, this is interesting... From a National Geographic article (which calls caffeine a "drug"):

    http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0501/feature1/

Should our standard be this: Does caffeine help me honor my body, which is the temple of God? (And it may help to take a serious look at this instead of trying to infuse the argument with humour...)

Did you feel drunk Scott? :BangHead:

    American Heart Association
Caffeine is in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate and some nuts. Whether high caffeine intake increases the risk of coronary heart disease is still under study.

Think we are discussing "mind altering drugs" such as acohol.

"Truck Driver's Aspirin" is definitely not No-Doz (R).

If we want to get down to the nitty-gritty, we have to remember that everything we take into our bodies affects us in some way or another.

I do not drink and preach against the use of alcohol for recreational purposes, but in the big scheme of things everybody will answer to God for what they put into the temple of the Holy Ghost.

A moment of irony: My computer just downloaded and installed a "java update" as I read this thread.

Now, ya'll get back to fighting, before someone accuses ya'll of not being Baptists...

I did some research on that when I was in grad school. You are absolutely right. Coffee (with its caffeine content) is a mind altering drug--if you drink an equivalent of 300 cups a day. They did the experiments on mice, and as many experiments go, came to the conclusion: what our labs need: is not more caffeine, but healthier and stronger mice.

Aha! We leave left-over coffee out for the mice to drink.

That must be why the cat can't catch them...

Don't get me started on mice! We've had 4 in my house in the last week. I hate having this full-wall fireplace that backs to the outside! The worst thing is that they're babies, way too cute (we've caught and released 3 of them) and they're too small for the mouse traps! I can't in good conscience do the glue traps so we release them at the power plant. ;)

OH - the 4th one was found in the 1/2 bath we're remodelling. Don't know how he got in there except maybe through where the radiator pipe goes through the wall between the den (and the fireplace) and the bath. Bleck!!
