Without gambling the horse racing business would be almost nonexistent. Gambling is the only real tangible "fruit" of the business. The rest of it is merely a means to an end.

Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

Can you really see Jesus and the apostles in the stands at Churchill downs with a cigar in one hand, a mint julep in the other, having just put a "C" note on "Baby's Dream" in the 4th? Pretty fruit does not equal good fruit to eat, just ask Eve.

I know people who will spend frivolous money on themselves before buying food for their kids. The problem is not necessarily the activity itself, but the problem is the priority of the person conducting the activity.

I disagree. I think he was born again. He was just a loon. Being a loon, idiot, scam artist, or moron does not preclude one from being saved. If it did, few of us would make it.

  4. Don't think you are getting my point one doesn't have to be ON the race track or even BET for that matter to be involved WITH the industry.

Thats like saying someone who grows grapes shouldn't do it because those grapes might go to make wine. Or someone shouldn't work at a store because there is alcohol in there. Or work in a tobacco field since people will get cancer from those cigeretts.

A horse breeder doesn't have to work or even be around the track to breed horses. Why would God bless a Christian ( I know ) with breeding horses that WIN and make alot of money or ones that SELL for thousands of $$$ if he didn't OK it ?

I knew a Christian lady I went to church with say her aunt ( A Christian ) many moons ago, was single raising small children and the way she supported them was betting on the track and did very well. Why did God allow that ?

Seems to me if God didn't want someone in that kind of Business he'd make it very clear and provide a way to get out.

I even know of someone who wasn't looking to get into breeding race horses but that is the route God provided through circumstances since that was the gift they had working with them and raising them. And has blessed them along the way

    Aaron,

you said, whats the good in the horse race industry.....I would have to say....The horses!

I used to want to be a jockey, or own my own horse ranch when I was a kid. There are so many different aspects to being in the horse business, that the racetrack and the betting is really a very small part....in the whole picture. Its just the most flashy and popular part, unfortunately.

And someone asked if the horses were treated ethically.....a thoroughbred will run for the love of running. They don't have to bait them to run like they do the greyhounds. It is hard on them, though, but I don't think that they are automatically euthanized upon retirement. They are often sold as saddle horses now, if I understand right.

  8. I don't own any race horses. Or I should say we are not owners. I breed and sell them, and then we get a % of their earnings 1st 2nd and 3rd. No matter how long they run.

Don't even have to got to the track , we mainly watch all our horses run on TV, so far 5 starters 4 winners in little over a year. We have done very well in this business and have felt God leading all the way. ( in fact I was happy with the 5 years he had given me working with horses, before and when I had gotten saved, that I was content ) I look at it as a business and sport and that is how I have treated it. And in doing so, and being blessed by God, we have done better than the average breeder in Ca. Just sold one today a 7 month old to a top trainer in Southern Ca for 6 x the stud fee. Not bad sight unseen.

I have to admit the way things are going in Ca. we will probably just breed the 3 mares we have till they are done and quit, and move on to other things. We don't need the income from the horses. I mainly enjoy working with the babies and having them, thats what got me started more than anything [IMG]

I will have to say having the horses helped me through a tough time when people we not my favorite subject. God has his reasons for allowing all things I guess.

  9. And you are right Bapmom race horses are not put down after they are done racing. All my mares raced ( very well too ) and they are in great hands with me till they die. Many of their foals have gone to very good conections. One filly now four is in Oregon the owner is rich and does this as a hobby so she just races her a few time a year, she is spoiled rotten. She loves the Bull tracks and wins on them all the time. Geldings and mares can go on to hopefull other disciplines. And some colts even get to be STUDS [IMG]

I believe one of the problems with the industry is too many people who are breeding poor quality mares and to, too many cheap pedigree stallions. That their future foals will not have a good enough career and they can easly end up going to meat market.

As in everything there is down sides and the Horse racing business/sport is no exception.
