SBC officials reject Carter, unity talk, but not all Southern Baptists join chorus
    By Greg Warner
    Published: January 12, 2007

ATLANTA (ABP) -- Southern Baptist officials harshly rejected Jimmy Carter's effort to unite all Baptists in North America under a compassion agenda, calling the ambitious plan "voodoo ecumenism" and a thinly veiled Democratic strategy to woo values voters.

But other Southern Baptists, including some reform-minded younger conservatives, called the SBC response un-Christ-like and prejudicial criticism from "fundamentalist elites."

On Jan. 9, leaders of 40 Baptist denominations and organizations in the United States and Canada -- led by Carter and "cheered" on by Bill Clinton -- announced a commitment to put aside social and theological differences to unite behind an agenda of compassionate ministry. The effort will begin with a Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant, a gathering set for January 2008.

The presence of two former Democratic presidents at the forefront of the ambitious plan triggered allegations that a political motive lurks behind the talk of Baptist unity.

SBC ethics official Richard Land said most Southern Baptists voted against Clinton and Carter, as well as failed presidential candidate Al Gore -- all Baptist Democrats. "I suspect that Mr. Carter and Mr. Clinton are upset about that," Land, president of the SBC's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

It needs to be dismissed. BUt then again many liberal and culturally reletive baptists will jump on that band wagon of Unity - "can't we all just get along". But they will follow their leaders Bill Clinton and Carter and others of their ilk down that broad path.

But what do I know, since I'm not in line with this garbage I obviously don't know my bible. I guess Clinton or Carter needs to come edubacate me.

As I stated on another thread, I'll repost it here.

Only THEN should they be taken seriously.
But that THAT will NEVER happen.

Liberals calling conservatives elitists? What a joke. There is nothing conservaative about anyone who follows Carter and Clinton. This is clearly misinformation that is reminiscent of the former days the libs controlled the BP. But of course it comes from the ABPNews No surprise there.

Anyone who supports the breakup of the church for political reasons is working for Satan. That's what the fundamentalists did. They took over the SBC for their own purposes, not God's. This bashing of Democratic Christians is indicative of what their (your) real motivation is.

That is a very strange accusation. The conservative's "motivation" was to bring the convention back to a biblical understanding of many important doctrines.

Whoever believes any and every doctrine can be compromised for the sake of unity is doing the work of Satan.

    peace to you:praying:

Even if I was of liberal inclination, Carter would be the last person that I would want representing me. It is one thing to be a liberal, its quite another to be a liberal idiot.

I don't know about the "bashing" but you yourself seem to be quite critical of conservatives. Practicing what you preach would help out your credibility. comparing the convention to a local church is inappropriate. However, what the conservatives did was restore biblical accountability and integrity to the convention and the schools it supports. Your interpretation of the truth is quite creative and very distorted.

You should really do more reading. There has been no one more critical of the present administration than me, because they are too liberal, obviously not the same reason you do not like them.

In the context of this thread, President Bush is not trying to interfear with the Baptist faith or influence it.

What do you call "Faith Based" Initiatives for just one example? Or should I say Faith Based Interference. The Religious Right has been so closely aligned with the Bush administration it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. It may not be as blatent as the Carter comments but it is there none the less.

I wasn't aware that Bush was in the SBC. Carter's main problem is not that he is a liberal politically (although that is bad in and of itself), it is that he is a liberal professing Christian. Then he next problem is that he was a failure as a president and doesn't need to be in any leadership position when it comes to matters of faith.

Bush is not "in" the SBC, but he has spoken at the annual convention, appeared with various leaders of the SBC and openly sought out mailing lists from the SBC.

I'm not sure I follow the logic..how does not being a good president equal not being capable of leading in matters of faith?

The problem is not the office...but the inability to lead.

I do not think I would compare the ability to lead in the Whitehouse to church matters. He was quite successful in TX. His opposition is largely unsaved liberals.(not all libs are unsaved) Although I havent seen anything that would allow me to put my trust in him spiritually.

The bottom line is that we can do better than selecting our spiritual leaders from amongst former politicians.

I would have to say that apostacizing the church at the expense of man's interpretation of untiy is an ulterior motive of satan.

    That is good politics.

Organizations ouside of the SBC were given mailing lists of students at the seminaries too. Some of them were dispensationalists. Dispensationalism is not a theology taught at the SBC seminaries. I wonder who is pushing that agenda?

In 1998 a state worker approached me and asked what I thought about dispensationalists being on some SBC boards. Wow, was I shocked!

You seem to be talking about Bush...whereas my comment had to do with Carter and his inability to lead in Washington or in the church.

Shocked that he would ask such a question or shocked that there are SBCers who are dispensational?
