I watched Dr. Mohler's report on Southern Seminary at this years Convention last night, and i hate to say it sounded like a political speech because i know it wasn't; but it did sound to me like he was positioning himself to lead the Convention. I know his name has come up often over recent years as a potential SBC President, especially in light of Paige Patterson serving a few years back.
Here is my question...with the SBC meeting in Louisville in 2 years during Southern's 150th anniversary, do you think Dr. Al Mohler will be our next convention president? Any thoughts?
btw...i do think he would make a great SBC President, so if this sounds negative, it's not meant to be.

I don't know what his chances are, but I sure like the guy's teaching. I may not agree on every point, but I think he really knows his stuff.

I like Dr Mohler, he does a good job defending the faith when he is on TV. I don't agree with his calvinist stand and I feel if he becomes president it will throw the convention into a battle over this issue.

Would it not throw the convention into a battle if he was a free-willer? If not, then why not?

According to some blogs of those who were there, he only gave a political speech. He was supposed to report on Southern Seminary and how things were going there. Since he did not report on what he was supposed to, they thought he gave a very poor report. (according to some blogs).

==Too late for that. The Southern Baptist Convention is already at war with it's self, and Baptist History, over Calvinism and the Baptist Church. Just look at statements made by Ergun Caner, Jerry Vines, Jerry Falwell, Tom Ascol, and others in the past year. Last year at the SBC Drs. Patterson and Mohler "debated" the issue and they had a large turn out. Look at the recent problems in Florida where someone in the state convention mailed out CDs to pastors which contained an anti-Calvinism sermon by Vines.

I don't, however, think this "war" is a bad thing. Those of us who hold to the "doctrines of grace" need to stand up and correct the faulty representation of our beliefs by men like Jerry Vines. We also need to stand up and correct their faulty understanding of Baptist history. A Mohler presidency would be the best thing to happen to the SBC since the conservative resurgence. It could only get better for the SBC if when Mohler has finished his term we could elect Tom Nettles and then Tom Ascol as President of the SBC.

And according to other blogs, he gave a good report. Blogs are just opinions.

I think he would be a great convention president. Personally, I think anyone who get Pastor Wade Burleson upset is a guy I'd vote for.

Dr. Mohler would indeed be a great president for the SBC...he already is a great one for SBTS.

The problem with Dr. Johnny Hunt is his credibility has been shot with the mess in FBC West Palm Beach after his handpicked leader for that congregation was fired in disgrace. Also, after he dropped out in '06 his other handpicked person (Ronnie Floyd) was easily beaten in that election. I'm not sure his place is secure.

The leadership has a bit of problem here, and I'm not sure they've figured out who to run. Dr. Mohler would be terrific, but in reality it will hard to get a 5 point Calvinist elected (ha!) in the SBC today...which is sad, we should be a "big tent" convention and not a little council convention.

I'd like to see Dr. Mohler as the President of the SBC, and there is an outside chance of seeing this happen, but more than likely it will be someone else than he or Dr. Hunt.

I'd rather not see seminary presidents as SBC top dogs.

    But that's just me.

I've been concerned that the "leadership circle" in the SBC has gotten too small. That worries me.

That's why I liked last year's election of Frank Page (among other reasons).

Amen:thumbs: I say let us stand up for the doctrines of grace and correct the caricatures. I, too, would love to see Dr. Mohler as president.

Well said. I think that it is improper for a leader of an SBC institution to be the president of the Convention.

No, it wouldn't. Because the significant majority of Southern Baptists are free-willers who flatly reject five point Calvinism (5PC).

Current SBC president Frank Page is a free-willer who has written a book critical of 5PC, and he hasn't been particularly controversial during his tenure.

Mohler's 5PC would definitely make him controversial and divisive.

Dr. Mohler would be a good choice----I know he's a five pointer---but there's a difference between someone being a five pointer and someone actually worshipping Calvinism---in which so many "Corn Field" preachers do---going on like Calvin is Jesus Christ!!

Johnny Hunt blew it when he stepped out of the race and flagged in Ronnie Floyd

I'd like to see a succession of Dr. Mohler and Dr. Gaines---four good years of Conservative leadership

rbell did make a good point about the leadership pool being rather narrow in scope. This may be because it's so hard to be recognised with such a contentious group as we are in the SBC though.

Having said that, I like Dr. Mohler.

    Isn't Page running for re-election?

I would like to see my pastor as the president, except he's not the political type. He did speak at the Pastor's conference last year. Dick Lincoln is a good man.....I vote for him.

    you mean Steve gaines?

Methinks his tenure at Bellvue has been too rocky for him to be prez:
    1. Many would say, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." (I'm not saying that, I don't know...but some would say with all that going on, he's too controversial).
    2. I think you could make the point that with all the junk at Bellvue, he should concentrate on that ministry there and not put another iron in the fire.

Of course, then again, you might be talking about Rowdy Gaines, the former Olympic swimmer, or some other Gaines, or your brother-in-law...

But I assumed you meant Steve of Bellevue Baptist fame (Dr. Adrian Roger's successor, for those of you who don't know him).

Why is this? James P. Boyce presided over the SBC for ten years while President of the Southern Seminary; E. Y. Mullins for three years, also as President of Southern; L.R Scarborough, W.W. Hamilton, and Paige Patterson for two years each, as Presidents of SBC Seminaries; James L. Sullivan for one year while heading the Sunday School Board, for a total of 20 years among them. And I believe there may have been more, as well, but am not sure on this.

Apparently the majority of the messengers to those conventions did not think there was anything improper about this, any more than they thought it improper to elect political figures, which included, I believe, four governors, Eagle, Levering, Gambrell, and Neff, a congressman, Hays, and a judge, Haralson. These political figures, if I am not mistaken about the identity of one or more, served a total of 25 years among them. Between politicos and SBC leaders, that is at least 45 years, out of the 162 years of the SBC history. According to my math, that is about 27 1/2 % of the history.

Are you suggesting that the SBC was wrong in this, which does not violate any SBC by-law to my knowledge, that often? Where does it say that the SBC President should necessarily be a pastor? Just wonderin'!
