It didn't help that my Canadian friend was absolutely gorgeous, but in addition to that unimportant surface characteristic, was polite and considerate, intelligent, and easy to talk to and joke around with. I was very uncomfortable and shy around boys at that age, and that spring it was really nice because I felt at ease to be silly or serious, to talk about what we each thought was important, and were basically the best of friends until youthful impatience and immaturity took over. I plan on telling my own kids to be content being friends for as long as you can--builds a more solid foundation that way.

I think the reason why we didn't hear objections from our parents was that his parents in particular had crushes on each other from the time they were 12. The major difference they did not consider was that they just saw eachother at various events and "made cow eyes" at eachother. And that was the extent of it until they were about 17.

His sister married my brother, and they have three little kids. So, at least someone benefited. :)

I'm the proud father of 3 lovely daughters. They are 12,10 and 4. I already have discussions periodically about boys, dating , marriage etc.... They know for a fact that they will not be going out on dates alone until 18 years of age unless they are extremely mature for a 16 or 17 year old.
I take my daughters out for little dates now as their dad showing them how a man should treat a lady.
Their boyfriends will be christian as far as I can surmise. They will pick them up in their own car be back at the time I specify. The boy will foot the bill all the way. If that doesn't happen he is history. HE can take that literally or figuratively which ever he thinks is best for his own well being.

A 18 year old dating a 14 year old is out of the question. Regardless of who the older party is. Big NO if it is older boy.

Speaking as a daughter whose father told her she couldnot date at all, except him......(he took me out all the time for a father/daughter time) I was in a couple serious relationships when we both felt I was ready. I am So Thankful for his insight and wisdom in these matters. ( and it is SO TRUE that young boys only want one thing, If you say that is not true, you are pretty much lying to yourself)
Way to go ShannonL! Keep it up!

    14 years old....

I just met a Jewish deli delivery man who proclaimed that he was 77 years old and hasn't seen a doctor in years (while he was profusely sweating from climbing a single set of stairs)

Anyway... he proudly stated that when he was 26 years old, he married a cute Catholic girl who was 14 years old!
    Times sure have changed.

    No fooling!!!
    Now that was 50 years ago, they were married in a township near here;
I'd bet some tongues were wagging even then.

I believe that in some states (Kentucky ?) young marriage is still permissable.

It's only been frowned upon in the last couple of generations, and is still permissible in many places. My grandparents were 23 and 15 when they got married. Think about young Jewish virgins marrying middle-aged men...

    Re: dating

Below I am showing the link to a film entitled Pamel's Prayer by Dave Christiano Films.

When I first saw this a few years ago I was so impressed that our church bought the film for every family in our church. At the time Mr. Christiano sold us the films at $5.00 a piece. If you have a daughter or if you are struggling with the concept of dating restrictions I would encourage you to purchase the film you will not be dissapointed.
