Did you know that this year (2007 for those of you who have forgotten) marks 300th anniversary of local Baptist Association work in the United States?
The Philadelphia Baptist Association began in 1907 and has grown to about 1200 local associations within the SBC.
How's that for a bit of trivia!

Here is an article from the Texas Baptist Standard, http://www.baptiststandard.com/postnuke/index.php?module=htmlpages&func=display&pid=5432

Clearly these people are not aware of the fact that Philadelphia Baptist Association could not have really been Baptist. After all they were Calvinistic and, according to Ergun Caner (etc), Baptists are not Calvinists. In fact according to Dr Caner Calvinists are worse than Muslims and represent a serious danger to the modern evangelical church.

Of course Caner is wrong and the above is written in the spirit of sarcasm. ;)

However, the Philadelphia Baptist Association is an American Baptist association/unit now. There is an SBC association in Philly, but the historic one is ABC. I hope this 300th anniversary will be celebrated when American Baptists meet here in DC this spring to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the organization of what was originally called the Northern Baptist Convention.

    Rhode Island Yearly Meeting

Though the Philadelphia is the first and oldest association in America, we should not forget that the General Six-Principle Baptist Rhode Island Yearly Meeting was formed in 1670. It is evidently the oldest gathering of Baptists beyond the church level.?

I meant 1707 and not 1907, sorry about the typo!
