I saw a Thompson Chain Reference Bible today at a local store. I had never actually looked through one and I was really impressed. I have several study bibles, but I don't always like the study notes and realize they are only the translators opinions. This bible seems to use scripture to study scripture. What do you guys think? Have you used one before?
    Thanks for the help! :)

    What translation are you considering?

    My Nov-Dec 2006 Catalogue from christianbook.com
notes Thompson Chain-Refere4nce Study Bibles in these
    transations:

    KJV
    NIV
    NASB
    nKJV

I wonder which KJV that is?

I've used it many times while working on a sermon.
When looking for other passages that parallel the one your reading, it is the best. The concordance and topical index is more comprehensive than any other bible out there.

I have a 1964 edition of the Thompson Chain with the KJV (reads the same as my 1945 Cambridge KJV). I have used it extensively, but I find the print too small now and must use magnifying lenses to read it, but I love it..handy information in the back for a quick study.

I don't get hung up on which modern KJV I use so long as it isn't in Chaucer Englishe, which is futile, even for this Englishman.

    Cheers,

    Jim

This is a good study Bible. Like all study Bibles it does reflect the opinions of the 'editor'. And like most editors, Thompson was probably not doing much translation.

Keep good translations, and study a lot. Remember that all chain references are weaker than using an exhaustive concordance and a couple of good commentaries as you study. IMHO.

    God Bless,

    Wayne

To me the Thompson seems to be much more of a reference Bible than a study Bible, thus the name Thonpson Chain Reference Bible. :love2:

Thanks to all for your input. Ed, the translation I use all the time now is the NKJV. I've used several others, but this is the one I like the best. I didn't come to the Lord until I was 22 and had no religious upbringing so I have a really hard time with KJV (I also had a hard time reading Shakespear in school  ) Please, I mean no offense. For those who understand the language, I applaud you. I have waivered back and forth over the years between study bibles and non study bibles (not sure what you call those...text bibles?). I'll think ok, I need to give up all the study notes and make it just between the Word and me. Then I'll run across someplace where I need some explanation and I'll go back to the study bible. So, I thought maybe the Th. Chain would sort of be the solution, not having any of the commentaries that are common in study bibles but only using references. Although, I do realize that "someone" had to make all those references and that adds the human element. I'm just so thankful to God that He has put this desire in me to study His word! I enjoy it so much! My husband gets a big kick out of picking on me about how many bibles I have  .
God bless you all, I have really enjoyed being on the BB so far!

    Keith,

If ya' buy it for any other reason than study, I would be surprised. And if it is only for reference, then I would buy a greek NT and a hebrew OT . . . But, I am just that way. Probably more semantics than anything else.

    God bless

    Wayne

I have numerous study bibles and they all have good things in them.
The Macarthur, King James study bible & Ryrie are great for theology.
My Greek Hebrew Spiros Zodhiates study bible is good for word study.
The Life Application is good for applying the word to your life.
Commentary sets are a real big help also.
But like you said if you don't want all the commentary and you would like to have just one bible to take to study say at the park, the Thompson is great for digging in the word.

What makes it stand out as best to you?

I don't think i've read any study Bible or commentary that I 100% agreed with. I believe they should be used more as food for thought and not confused with God's word.

I recently purchased a VERY nice but pricey ($135) Genuine CAlfskin Thompson in NKJV that I REALLY am enjoying. I've been wanting one for a while but hadn't bought one. I finally dished out for it after receiving some settlement $$. I still haven't really scratched the surface of it's study aids which is the main reason I bought. Another bible I used to like because of it's aids & FEW notes was the Open bible. That is considerably cheaper as well. HOwever I've noticed the Open bible has been "updated" & last I saw it had more notes etc which I'm not crazy about either. I like how the cross references are at the end of the verses in the Open bible. It also has a great Cyclopedic Index which is neat. You should look into that one as well. :wavey:

Oh no, don't tell me that! I'll have to have that one too. I have a definite weakness for buying bibles! Actually, I have thought about the Open Bible..maybe for Christmas
Thanks to all for your input. It's nice to have a place to go to get opinions.

The TC has been my regular Bible for 20+ years now. I love it. The back of it has more information than a college course. But my next bible will not be TC. I want one of those with a wide margin so I can write lots of notes in it.
