Joshua Muravchik is a self-described "dyed-in-the-wool, true-believer neocon"(www.aei.org/publications/pubID.25161,filter.all/pub_detail.asp) who is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute(AEI). I watched him on "Hardball" on MSNBC today laying out his case for these United States to bomb Iran. I searched and here is a column that he wrote last year about this:

    www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-op-muravchik19nov19,0,5419188.story?coll=la-home-commentary

Obviously, I disagree with his position as I do not think that turning the pro-Western young populace of Iran against us is a good idea in the long run, our troops in Iraq would be exposed to severe blowback, and I don't think our economy would survive $150/bbl.(or even higher) oil prices.

But in the interest of good discussion I have provided the link above to his column.

Never heard of him. He's just another guy with an opinion.

We must stop this saber rattling. Perpetual war as we wage it is not economically sustainable.

Perhaps the threat of possible US strikes is bringing some conservatives and moderates in Iran to the boiling point right now. Time will only tell. Perhaps they can pressure the present regime out of existence. Or it may backfire worse than the Bay of Pigs. I keep holding out hope that the Bush Administration will present a coherent foreign policy at some point in time regarding some situation.

And I also hope that Tennessee can win the SEC championship in football (we all know we will in basketball)

Now that's a scientific standard for popularity if I ever saw one! So have you ever heard of the American Enterprise Institute, the self described most influential think tank in the world?

    Nope.

Do I need them to tell me what to think?

The Razorback basketball team under Pelphrey may have something to say about that. :)

No one has suggested you need anyone to tell you what to think. Not AEI, not Joshua Muravchik, not Baptist Board in general, nor Rush in particular. But I take it from your branching out of your presumed intelletual isolationism that you were at the very least interested in talking about the gentlemen KenH linked to, or why post?

    Back to the OP:

If we aren't going to immanently attack Iran or nail them with an ultimatum backed by a contingent attack, this is dangerous for our credibility to say the least. Also, Muravchik concedes that, "Bush's team woefully mismanaged the war," and, "the war (which neocons supported) was misconceived": both of which beg the question why would he trust Bush with yet another war?

    It should be obvious.

I posted to say that his opinion doesn't mean anymore than anyone elses in spite of him being "a self-described "dyed-in-the-wool, true-believer neocon", like I should care.

Why did you post? Until just now, you had directed your posts to me instead of the OP.

Now, you grandly announce "Back to the OP" when you had never been there in the first place.

It's obvious to me that the only reason you're interested in what this particular "self described neocon" has to say is that you agree with him.

    I smell some hypocrisy here.

It will soon be obvious to every nation with a collective fear of God that Iran needs to be stopped. I pray that day nears.

Not to slurp him too much on this board, but Tucker Carlson has come out and said the world should work together to stop Iran. I'm pretty sure he's no neocon.

Oh, yeah? Well, I've tasted more abstractions then you've misappropriated to physical sensations! :)

    Also...

I disagree with him. I quoted portions of his article to illustrate why I disagree with his conclusions about invading Iran. Reread the thread. After you read the article which you obviously haven't.

I think there is a general consensus of just that. There just isn't a consensus as to how. 1) Can the US extend itself this far with conflicts in two other nations? 2) Is there a chance of military action spreading to other parts of the region? 3) Is there a chance that Israel will deal with this for us and spare our involvement?

If the answer to 3 is yes than we might be okay through no fault of our own.

Another scenario is Israel will deal with it, and then be condemned for ruining everything.

"We were SO CLOSE to world peace......."

    Whatever that means.

But please don't explain it. It was just too abstract for me to deal with.

Even is Iran wants to attain a nuclear weapon(which has not been proven) it has many hurdles to overcome and is years away from doing so. Even if Iran had a nuclear weapon and can learn how to put it on a missile it has no missile that can reach these United States and won't have one for years. And if years down the road Iran attains to nuclear weaponized missiles it still would be rather absurd, in my opinion, that Iran would threaten these United States as we have enough nuclear weapons to vaporize Ahmadinejad and his cohorts many times over within an hour of an attack on these United States.

And I think that it is rather absurd, in my opinion, to think that Iran can threaten Israel with a nuclear weapon or two. Israel has more than enough nuclear weapons to vaporize Ahmadinejad and his cohorts within an hour of an attack on Israel.

No one wants Israel to get involved in anything, they have a tendency to do things right the first time. I think their motto is "Shoot first ask questions Later"

I like that one, it tends to earn you respect, which as God's chosen people, they should get it.

As much as I detest the United States sticking their nose into everyone's business at the expense of American lives, I must agree with Brother Curtis. In fact, had we had insightful and perceptive leadership in 2002, it would have been concluded that Iran should have been the focus of our efforts, not Iraq.

Iran is a real threat. There ARE weapons of mass destruction. There are nut cases in charge and not afraid to use them. Iran can affect the oil markets. One day, in the not too distant future, we are going to wish we had all those resources that were squandered in Iraq.
