When poverty is outlawed, only outlaws will be poor.

We need fewer cabinet positions, not more.

If the churches of America were doing their job such a cabinet member would not be needed nor mentioned. In fact there would be no need of any governmental social welfare programs of any kind.

I am not so sure this is true of many countries in Europe as so few people are practicing Christians.

Appointing a Secretary of Poverty is a really poor idea.

Sounds to me like Senator Clinton is attempting to get the endorsement of John Edwards ahead of the North Carolina primary. This is the type of position I could see a President Clinton appointing him to.

If "Subprime" Johnny ever becomes head of the poverty dept., it'll definately prove America has lost her mind.

The main answer is: sharing information

In addition, there was not that much addtion of employees, as the dept of HS simpy brought several agys under one roof.

Personally, I would far prefer that churches help the poor rather than the government. I haven't seen in my lifetime that they are willing or able to do that. Rather than having thousands of people die of malnutrition or diesase in America without ant help I'd rather see the government step in. The so-called conservatives would rather see them die.

    Secretary of poverty....hmmm.....

If gas stays at $3.50 a gallon, I'll volunteer for that position.

And do you think God would rather see them die, since he could feed every one of them, but he doesn't?

Exactly and that's all it is!

We don't need yet another federal government department. In fact, we need to close down most that have been created in the last few generations.

The answer to poverty is to let people with money make more money by capital investments that generate the need for workers and then for those workers to train hard, work hard, live within their means, have a good idea, take some risk, and pray for God's blessing as they try to do likewise with their wealth.

Government has no answers that work. All they can do is extra wealth from some and parcel it out to others for favors while skimming a lot off the top. We should have learned that by now.

I'll bet the Clinton's don't invest their $100 million in government!

Government has a responsibility to ensure equality of opportunity. However, government does not have a responsibility to ensure equality of results.

Let me give you one example. Now, I am not saying this is true of every case, but I believe it to be widespread.

A family in our church seems to have a lack of money. Mrs Salty wanted to take them to the grocery store to buy them some groceries. I suppose we would have spent up to $100 with them. That is, we would have went to the store with them. Well before we would go, we sat down with them to go over their budget. They receive SSI and food stamps. The first item on their monthly budget was cigarettes - $300 no mistake three hundred dollars for cancer sticks. It was at that point we decided we did not have to supplement their food bill.

I am a compassionate conservative. I am cautious about helping the greedy, but I do want to assist the needy. But it is a two way street. A person must be willing to help themselves. I could go on for a bit, but I think you get the ideal.

What about those unable to help themselves, such as the handicapped and chronically sick?
