    What about this one:

    peradventure

    Main Entry: 1per·ad·ven·ture
    Pronunciation: 'p&r-&d-"ven-ch&r, 'per-; "p&r-&d-', "per-
    Function: adverb
Etymology: Middle English per aventure, from Old French, by chance
    archaic : PERHAPS, POSSIBLY

That one threw me when I first started reading the KJV.

    Michelle,

Why are you always so quick to attack the moderating team - I was SUPPORTING your statement!?!

The post involving the Wycliff translation had nothing to do with arcahic words and I AGREED with you.
    --------------------------------------------------

Oh, I am sorry C4K, I in no way meant you specifically, and I should have acknowledged this in that post to clarify this, as I did realize that you were defending my statement (and thank you by the way), prior to posting that. I am sorry, and I was not very clear, and I can see how you would think that. I will try to be more clear.

I don't have anything against the moderators, but many have in the past (to which I was referring) to which have accused me of things of being off topic when they are not.

Love in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour,
    michelle

If you can come across a TBS KJV I think they all have this list of KJV words which have changed meaning.

WORDS WHICH HAVE CHANGED IN MEANING

The following list of over 500 archaic and obsolete words and phrases has been prepared in order to help the average reader understand more readily the meaning of the King James Version. Of course, not all of these words and phrases are inappropriate in all contexts and hence each expression is followed by a list of those passages in which misunderstanding is likely to occur.

In each instance the bold-face word or phrase represents the King James text. This is followed by a dash to separate it from the more meaningful alternative. Where there is more than one alternative, each is given and the corresponding passages are listed.

Though this list of archaic and obsolete words is not exhaustive, it does, however, provide the reader with a handy reference to most expressions which are likely to produce difficulty in comprehending the meaning of the King James Version.

I think that is the list - now we need to determine which are truly archaic.

Also which are only different to American readers.

"Anon" is a common word here, for one quick example.

BTW - a GREAT job in salvaging the thread!!!

The AV 1611 was a modern version, the most modern English version of its day, and indeed was criticized by some clerics of the day for being TOO MODERN!

There were many words in common use only a century or so earlier that were NOT used in the KJV, being replaced with the then-most-modern words. They had begun to replace 'peradventure' with 'perhaps'.

They replaced 'gonfalon'(pennant or flag) with 'standard'.

They replaced 'hard by' with 'near', using 'hard' MOST of the time as WE use it, with only a few instances of its being used for 'close', although most contemporary literature used 'hard' rather than'near'.

They didn't use the common 'nunnery' for bawdy house, peradventure in deference to the RCC.

They used 'charger' only for a covered platter, and not for its several older meanings having to do with battle.

They used the newer 'soothsayer' instead of the common, older 'augur'.

There are many more, but you should get the idea from these.

And one old usage I can think of immediately...'holpen'. It's the past participle of 'healp'(help). These were going out of use by 1600, being replaced w/'help, helped'.

Summary...the AV 1611 was the most modern English BV of the 17th century.

That's the list I was using. I have a problem with it, though. I think that way too many of those words don't belong there.

The first one is a good example. Abased means humbled. It hasn't changed meaning. Abased may not be a common word, but it isn't archaic or particularly obscure either.

The words that concern me most are the ones that are used commonly now to mean something different than what they most commonly meant then, because the unwary reader just assumes they know what the word means, and they don't. That can cause all sorts of problems and strange interpretations--like the "peculiar people" interpretation I mentioned earlier in the thread.

There was one particular thread here recently that became centered over a meaning change in a word used--I won't mention it, because it would probably divert this thread. I do think, however, that not realizing that a word had changed its primary meaning caused the real meaning of a passage to be missed.

Well, lets try to narrow the list down by stating words that are still in common usage. Then we can discuss those for pros and cons. Hopefully, we will have a good list of true archaic words when we are finished.

Our problem is going to be defining what is truly archaic. Archaic to me may not be archaic to someone either more educated, or in a different part of the country (or another country--like C4K mentioned; examp: England.)

For example, I would throw out "waster" which means "destroyer". Wouldn't that be fairly obvious?

    The first ten words:

In my personal view only accursed=devoted and advertise=advise has changed enough to affect the meaning.

    Thoughts?

I grew up with KJV so I have absolutely no idea if people would get the wrong impression. It seems that anyone who has had High School English is familiar with Shakespear, and they should be learning how to define through context, but alas our school system is failing us.

PastorJeff, I'm not proud of this, but our High School Shakespear study was little or none. All I knew was that he was hard to read. I would consider that a school system failure and I graduated in 1975.

My knowledge of the KJV English was based on growing up in a Baptist Church and then I still had trouble reading it. When I was about 8 I discovered "The Good News for Modern Man" and although I understand it is not a good translation, I did devour it, because for once, I could read it like a story and understand it--rather than struggling through one verse at a time.

I think the list is wrong about the accursed = devoted thing. If accursed = devoted, then why does no version translate it that way? And in the context, devoted would make no sense whatsoever.

I would drag out my old dictionary to look it up to see if it EVER meant that, but I'm too tired. Maybe later.

Do you know what the hypotenuse is when one side is five, the other twelve in a right triangle. I taught that in basic math. do you remember the sine and cosine law. The average carpenter at the turn of the century knew that upon graduating from high schol at the turn of the century. Do you?

The school is not so much failing us. It is the parents who teach their childreen to cry and complain when the teacher expects something. I have actually had parents complain to me about how hard I am. I tell them the truth about how their son or daughter is lazy.

The clue is in the meaning of the underlying Hebrew word. "Devoted" in the sense of "devoted to destruction," hence under a curse.

</font>[/QUOTE]I agree with you to a certain extent, but we have people here saying their children can understand the KJV without question.

Where do we draw the line on "reading level"?

I certainly don't think a ten year old would recognize "advertise as advise", or several of the other words. Are we only going to refer to college educated, or sixth grade education?

Not arguing with you, just trying to define what is "understandable to modern Americans" and what is not. [IMG]

I found one tonight, and I have to admit, I had to laugh...

2 Tim. 3:3 "incontinent" Other translations render it as "self-control" or "sound judgment."
Considering the modern English meaning of the word "incontinent..." Well... [IMG]

Did "Drink ye all of it." really mean to "Drink from it, all of you." in the Greek?

    Yes.

NKJ Matthew 26:27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.

NIV Matthew 26:27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.

    NAS Matthew 26:27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you;

    RSV Matthew 26:27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;

    Ahhh....

Cursed, then, is a pretty good translation and not archaic at all.
