The leaders of the Sept. 11 commission acknowledged on Aug. 12 that their staff had met with a Navy officer last July, 10 days before releasing the panel's final report, who asserted that a highly classified intelligence operation, Able Danger, had identified "Mohamed Atta to be a member of an Al Qaeda cell located in Brooklyn."

But the statement, which did not identify the officer, said the staff determined that "the officer's account was not sufficiently reliable to warrant revision of the report or further investigation" and that the intelligence operation "did not turn out to be historically significant."

With his comments on Monday, Captain Phillpott acknowledged that he was the officer who had briefed the commission last year. "I will not discuss the issues outside of my chain of command and the Department of Defense," he said. "But my story is consistent. Atta was identified by Able Danger by January-February of 2000. I have nothing else to say."

Divulging classified information to ANYONE is a felony.

It is a sad day when anyone can divulge classified information for political gain.

PS: By Federal Law (& UCMJ), the Pentagon can neither confirm nor deny the allegations until they have followed proper protocol.

Typical of the Pentagon, they covered up the downing of TWA flight 800 south of Long Island by a surface-to-air missile (1996).

They covered up the missile that struck the Pentagon on 9-11, it was not an airplane as reported in the news.

Did this missile that hit the Pentagon have wings, wheels, a tail, terrified passengers, and Moslem fanatics at the controls?

Nope, done of that was found in the debris which means it had to be a missile. The second or third wall had a circular hole punched out from the impact of the missile, airplanes don't do that.

And all the eye witnesses in Washington, D.C. who actually saw the airplane are liars.

    Nut - you are certifiable.

Well, let's be fair. Maybe the missile emanated a visible force field that just looked like an airplane -- kind of like star trek.

The Pentagon spokesman isn't refusing to confirm or deny -- he is claiming that they haven't found anything to validate LTC Shaffer's claims. That's something completely different. Maybe things have changed since I was involved with these things in the mid-1980's, but back then, open-source information was not classified at all, since, by definition, it was already in the public domain.

A missile? You can view a picture showing airplane reckage at this link:

There is an awful lot of conspiracy theory items on the web. Be careful about what you read, especially on the internet.

Some pertinent questions are qouted below. You can read all the info at:

    http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blflight77.htm

Here is an interesting question, "If American Airlines Flight 77 didn't crash into the Pentagon, what did happen to the jetliner and all its passengers?" Interesting.

To quote the late Carl Sagan, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof."

Three Proofs that a Plane did crash into the Pentagon.

Eyewitness testimony of bystanders who saw and/or heard American Airlines Flight 77 approach and collide with the Pentagon

The recovery of both black boxes belonging to the Boeing 757 from the Pentagon wreckage

The recovery and identification of the remains of all but one of the people known to be aboard Flight 77

The Urban Legend site lists many reasons for debunking the conspiracy theory.

Does anyone here believe that a lot of politicians and government agencies are not trying to suppress Able Danger?

    Not me Carpo.

I believe that everyone in Washington, D.C. who stands to be embarrassed by this is Covering his tracks and keeping mum. And all those who are not personally involved but owe someone who is are keeping quiet too.

Senate May Hold Hearings on Able Danger, Info Sharing
    Thursday, August 25, 2005

WASHINGTON — Aides to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (search), R-Pa., are actively discussing a hearing on "Able Danger" and the larger issue of information-sharing between the Pentagon and the FBI, FOX News has confirmed.

Able Danger (search) is the code name for a military-intelligence unit that apparently learned a year before the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that lead hijacker Mohamed Atta (search) and other terrorists were already in the United States.

One of the central Able Danger claims — that military lawyers blocked the sharing of the Atta information from the FBI in the late summer and early fall of 2000 — will be a focus of the committee's if a hearing takes place, FOX News has confirmed.

Some analysts involved with Able Danger have recently gone public with their findings, saying they were discouraged from looking further into Atta, and their attempts to share their information with the FBI were thwarted, because Atta was a legal foreign visitor at the time.

"This story needs to be told. The American people need to be told what could have been done to prevent 3,000 people from losing their lives," said Rep. Curt Weldon (search), R-Pa.
