    There was a joke that the way troops could tell who their opponents were was how they returned fire:
    If they returned accurate rifle fire, they were British.
    If they returned accurate machine gun fire, they were German.
    If they came rushing headlong in a horde, they were Russian.
    If they did not immediately return fire, you better get moving because they’re American, and your position will be obliterated from artillery and air strikes in about 10 minutes.    ​
