The Government of Turkey might have an Islamic state religion but you can rest assured that the Church is still in Turkey and even in those cities that are still with us today.

You cited a treaty...I cited a decision by the supreme court. The Church of the Holy Trinity v. The United States, 143 U.S. 457 (1892). In this court case, the Supreme Court of the United states said, "These, and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation."

I have read that court decision from beginning to end several times. They systematically walk through the early history of America and come to an emphatic conclusion that "This is a Christian nation." Is this still anecdotal?

Here are a few quotes from this long forgotten Supreme Court decision:

    Is that anecdotal?

Also, on Sept. 12, 1782 Congress officially authorized the printing of a King James Bible by a man named Aitken. Here's what congress had to say:

I have heard the name David Barton before but I have no idea who he is. If I had learned this from that man would it make it less true?

The so-called "Bible Congress" was derided after the Aitken decision, but it is irrelevant to the current government of the United States. This was prior to the adoption of the current Constitution of the United States, and has no bearing on the current government.

There have indeed been various calls for "days of prayer" or "days of Thanksgiving", and while I would argue these are inappropriate, they have been deemed to constitute "Ceremonial Deism", not appealing to any particular god.

As for Barton, yes, his sloppy research and outright misrepresentation and lies are well documented, so citing him, or others who used him as primary source, is indeed suspect.

Finally, we are not a "Christian Nation" in any official sense. The population is predominately one form of Christian or another, but we have a separation of religion and government. We all are free to exercise any religion we see fit, according to our conscience (or to adhere to no religion at all); while the government may not impose religion on the people. It is freedom of religion (free exercise clause of the First Amendment) and freedom from religion (establishment clause). You can't have one without the other.

"And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord."

Senator James Harlan of Iowa, whose daughter later married President Lincoln's son Robert, introduced this Resolution in the Senate on March 2, 1863. The Resolution asked President Lincoln to proclaim a national day of prayer and fasting. The Resolution was adopted on March 3, and signed by Lincoln on March 30, one month before the fast day was observed.

Its pretty obvious that it wasn't just "Ceremonial Deism." It was the blatant national thanks to a specific God for allowing us to be a free nation! And guess what...I didn't find that at a Christian website. I found it at a secular website.

I just read through this proclamation and Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation, which were both authorized by congress, and it would take a fool to think that these documents were speaking of anyone other than the Judeo-Christian God!

You claims are fast becoming as well-documented as 'outright misrepresentation' as you claim Barton's is.

As per your remarks about us not being a Christian nation, you have now entered into a futile debate of semantics. Since the government does require us to be Christian we are therefore not Christians, or so you say. Although our laws are very largely based on the Judeo-Christian law, and our people, you admit, are predominately of some denomination or another of Christians, you still claim we were not founded as a Christian nation. Okay.

Courtesy proclamations do not a "Christian Nation" make. You love theocracy? Try Iran.

How so? I have stated truth.

Now you are just rambling nonsense. Where does the govt. require anyone to be Christian? Quite the contrary. Read the Constitution, our foundation of government. Where does it mention God?

It amazes me the animocity and hostility to the Christian foundations of this country by those who call themselves Christians.

That was not an improper citing by Magnetic Poles, whether or not you or I might like it.

Didn't the Supreme Court decision come after the Treaty of Tripoli by about a 100 years? I might have my history all mixed up in my mind by the treaty was in the late 1700's and the court case in the late 1800's.
I know as a child in the 1940's I saw a lot of Bible verses engraved in a lot of the government buildings in DC. I don't know if you would call this a Christian nation back then but the court case did and I believe, many more folks were in agreement with more of the Christians' teaching back in the late 1700 and early 1800's than today.
All it would have taken was George Washington to ask France to let Thomas Payne out of prison but he wouldn't, due to Payne's writings, but I believe Jefferson got him out, if I recall my history correctly.

What amazes me is the historical revisionism and outright fabrication by people who call themselves Americans.

The revisionism has been accomplished by socialist/communists who turned colleges such as yale and harvard from theological seminaries to secular revisionists schools.
