The Scriptures tell us..."Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

Having that thought in mind, which of the following activities would you say bring glory to God?

    God Bless!!!

(p.s. there is a method to my madness in asking this question. i'll explain later)

Funny thing...More people voted that it glorified God to watch baseball, but not as many said football did. Go figure. hehehehehe!

But you do not have to go to church every time the doors open to glorify God.

much of the answers were not yes or no but a maybe.
    smoking definately not
playing baseball. good for the body... could use as opportunity to witness.
    witnessing. of course.
    dieting...wellll not sure...
watching tv. what and who are you watching with?
    prayer always.
church every time doors open. hmmm
drinking... yes and no. it does not dishonor Him in moderation. But it does not particularly honor him I choose to refrain from using it.(ducking to aviod the rotten fruit and veggies.)
    football... neutral...depends
    picnic... again nuetral...
partying as in the drunken bash type of thing is definately not. um block party outreach thing no alcohol might glorify Him.

Sherrie, I think that would be because a group of Christians can play baseball, but we are watching a secular game on tv. [IMG]

It seems to me that the only thing on the list that cannot be done to glorify God is smoking. There is nothing good about smoking other than the pleasure one can get from it (referring here to people who enjoy smoking). The rest can be (but are not inherently) God glorifying.

I would even argue with this one. When my husband was dying of cancer, and he sat out on our front porch in his wooden chair and smoked his pipe, enjoying the winter sunshine and the beautiful mountain scenery, and praying for those of us he would leave behind, I guarantee you, he was smoking that pipe to the glory of God....

What a day of rest it is to be watching football on Sunday afternoon!

Just remember, the human mind can rationalize anything.

C.H. Spurgeon, the great Baptist pastor of Metropolitan Tabernacle in London just before the turn of the century said that he smoked cigars to the glory of God. Eventually, however, he realized it was not glorifying to God and gave them up. But I still think that is a great story.

That's a myth. Spurgeon never stopped smoking cigars.

...and would someone please explain to this old buzzard how you can glorify God by drinking that which destroys lives and families???? How can you glorfy God by sitting in a bar full of drunks or sitting in your home with an alcoholic beverage? I just don't get it. Like one post said...the human mind can rationalize anything.

Next, someone will say you can witness to someone while committing adultery.

You can accomplish nothing for God without the power of the Holy Spirit and when one indulges in sin the Holy Spirit is nowhere around....God won't fellowship with sin; the Holy Spirit is God!!! [IMG]

    Hi Ernie; [IMG]

I agree with everything you said in your post, with the exception of your last statement.

The Holy Spirit lives in me; therefore if I go into a bar, the Holy Spirit has to go with me.

If we would think about that; maybe we would not be so quick to defend the wrong things we do.

We are grieving the Holy Spirit when we take Him someplace He does not want to be.

    Blessings,
    Sue

    First to AJ,

One of Spurgeon's biographers (and I cannot remember which one) recalled the story when Spurgeon realized that smoking was causing others to stumble and thus recanted. One of my close friends just did a paper on Spurgeon and he sited this. I will find out for you so you can examine it.

    To Ernie,

I am not writing this to mock you, but to affirm your idea that the depravity of man will in fact bring it to justify anything. I was in Phili working for a camp called M-Fuge a couple of years ago and at one of the sites one of my adult leaders for the week went up to a woman sitting on a bench and began to talk about what we were doing there. The woman got all excited and began to tell my adult leader how she "served" God by being a hooker for Jesus. She told this girl how she would sleep with the men and then leave a tract on the nightstand before she left. There was no doubt in my adult leaders mind that this woman was telling the truth. Not only did she know just about every man that drove by, but she pulled out several tracts from her purse and tried to give them to my adult leader. It was rather sad indeed. I told that story later to my team, who sad in silent shock for a few moments. You are right Ernie, how amazing our sinful nature is when it comes to justifying sin. However, we do need to be careful how we judge others "sin" as opposed to our belief that it is a sin. I think the 1 Corinthians situation speaks a great deal to this argument.

Yes, please do. Every reputable source I've seen denied the story.

Spurgeon was right, BTW. You can smoke to the glory of God. I can't because it would break a promise I made, but others can.

"Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?"

How can a person smoke, or do anything that causes so much disease and so many deaths, to the glory of God???

Emphysema, Asthma, Sinitis, Cancer, Heart Attacks, Strokes, Addiction. (Just to name of few). God gave us health, life and a body to live in and, if we are misusing it, we are not being good stewards of one of God's gifts.

Smoking will not send you to hell and it may not even be a sin....but smoke to the glory of God? I think not!

And how can we stand by and watch men, women and children be trotured and killed by Saddam Hussein, and the many other countries that use their own people as a means of power?

It was good to see that there were more votes for "NO" in the drinking question. I was sort of surprised actually. This pole also started me thinking that everyone here is not saved. My reasoning is to the praying with your children not being honorable to God. I would like to hear the reasons why not.

    Helen:
If not going to church everytime the door is open is not honoring God, then what is the activity that stops you from going and is it honoring God?

"Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?"

If you'll check the context, it's about sexual immorality, not health.

When God calls you home, you're going, and not sooner or later.

Smoking will not send you to hell and it may not even be a sin....but smoke to the glory of God? I think not!

If it isn't to the glory of God, it's sinful.
