We don't celebrate it in my church either. However I think it is rude and uncalled for to post a dig at Tim when all he asked was how others did celebrate it, not if we should. Why the need to post something that is just insulting someone and nothing more?

I have no idea when advent, or any of the other Catholic supposedly special "holy", days and "feasts" and "seasons" occur.

They are utterly irrelavent for me.

I wake up every day knowing that (((THIS))) is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it!

    Galatians 4: 8-10...

Its just how I feel about it. If others enjoy those things, thats fine.

Bet you do!! Don't know too many who could not tell me when we celebrate the Advent of Jesus into this world. (Christmas)

    Or His crucifixion/resurrection. (Good Friday/Easter)

    Or pentecost. (50 days later)

Know some special days, saints, etc? Yes, you do.

We just had "Hallowed E'en" Oct 31 before All Saints Day Nov 1

St Patrick's Day? Wear the orange, bro. You DO know the date.

Seasons? Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter are probably well known to you.

So is the Lord's Day each week.

Nothing "catholic" about them. Never was. (Unless you equate the early church 200-300 AD with the modern Roman Catholic Church - which would not be wise)

    See. Told ya! :saint:

    Nativitie

    My favorite Christmas poem:

    Nativitie

    by John Donne

Immensitie cloysterd in thy deare wombe,
    Now leaves his welbelov'd imprisonment,
There he hath made himselfe to his intent
    Weake enough, now into our world to come;
But Oh, for thee, for him, hath th'inne no roome?
Yet lay him in this stall, and from the Orient,
Starres, and wisemen will travell to prevent
Th'effect of Herods jealous generall doome.
Seest thou, my Soule, with thy faiths eyes, how he
Which fils all place, yet none can hold him, doth lye?
Was not his pity towards thee wondrous high,
That would have need to be pittied by thee?
Kisse him, and with him into Egypt goe,
With his kinde mother, who partakes thy woe.

Nativitie is the third in a series of seven interlinked sonnets by John Donne titled La Corona, or The Crown. Modeled after the Franciscan Crown, the focus of which is the Virgin Mary, the object in Donne's crown is Christ.

Mother's Day is obviously on the liturgical calendar. Thanksgiving, too, because we're American and we are really, really good and have a lot of really, really nice stuff.

Seriously, Timothy, I don't always see eye to eye with you and Bob, but you two are spot on with this stuff.

Thanks for pointing out the absolute lunacy of the dissenting opinions expressed on this issue.

God, save us from mindless, stunted thinking.

No, perhaps it is because we are in the Debate forums and that's what you are supposed to do here. If Tim only wanted to have a discussion about what other churches did, he should have posted in the fellowship forum where debating is not allowed.

Speaking of being a gentleman, I think it's highly improper for a married man to put a celebrity/model as their avatar. What kind of message does that send to your wife? I guess I'm just old fashioned, but I consider lust equal to adultery.

Debate is one thing. Sarcastic ranting is another.

Hmmm...it might simply be a joke. That doesn't mean he's "lusting."

I haven't engaged in any sarcastic ranting. I stated the reasons why I (and my church) don't follow this tradition. Maybe I've missed the point of this debate section....or maybe just this post. I guess this post was just a place for liberal high fiving. (yes, that was sarcastic ranting)

I showed to her the day I did it as a matter of fact. Actually if it burned you up it was well worth doing. Stop being a stick in the mud. Go get a beer & relax.

Hey Jesus is the one that said lust was the same as adultery. I just respect what he said. Even if he didn't say it, its just common respect to a woman that you don't put a picture of another woman in her face. Really...who does that? I guess the same guy that is drunk while doing it.

You aren't worth the energy. I'll be ignoring you from here on out.

My my there's been a lot of over sensitivity on the board as of late.

I never even heard of advent until I attened a particular Baptist Church in my late twenties. Every week a family would stand before the church, recite from a script, read a scripture, and light a candle. It was Biblical in scope and pointed the church to Christ and the reason for celebrating Christmas. I had no problem with it then, nor do I now.

Matthew, Matthew, Matthew. Give the guy a break. He's just trying to get some of you to lighten up.

And there is a difference between a joke and lusting. Seeing a woman's face and using her image does not constitute lusting. It's not "every man's battle." And if it happens to be your battle, might want to think twice about bringing that up.
