The sales continued partly because of Cutter's desire to deplete stocks of the older medicine, and partly because of fixed-price contracts, for which the company believed the older product would be cheaper to make, the newspaper said...In late 1984, as Hong Kong hemophiliacs began testing positive for HIV, some doctors wondered whether Cutter was sending "AIDS-tainted" medicine into less-developed nations.

    But the company assured its distributor that the unheated product posed "no severe hazard" and was the "same fine product we have supplied for years."

    And the FDA knew, and kept it quiet. Just when you think they can't do anything worse...

    The FDA helped Bayer kill thousands of kids in other countries, so that they could sell their HIV-tainted medicine.

    Does anyone even care?

    Independent investigation. If guilty, prison sentences and Bayer should go out of business.

    Sounds like a corporate decision - that monetary compensation for the victims & their families would be less than the profits made from selling tainted stock.

    What person would be held responsible for the corporation's decision?

    Hold everyone involved in decision making responsible.

    WASHINGTON – A documentary seven years in the making tying Bill Clinton to an Arkansas prison blood scandal that spread AIDS to thousands around the world is set to screen in Hollywood next week – renewing controversy about the long-forgotten story.
    The film, which premieres at the prestigious American Film Institute film festival next Tuesday, reportedly uncovers fresh evidence about how thousands in Europe contracted AIDS and hepatitis through tainted blood deliberately shipped even after widespread problems were discovered in Canada where some 10,000 had already been infected.

    "Factor 8: The Arkansas Prison Blood Scandal," made by Kelly Duda, an Arkansas native, will reveal new details about how inmates at an Arkansas jail were paid to donate blood despite authorities knowing they had AIDS and hepatitis.
    The documentary shows how senior figures in the state prison system altered prisoners' medical records to make it look like they were not carrying the deadly diseases.

    Years ago some of us were saying Clinton sold AIDS-tainted blood to Canada, and we were told to shut up about it.

    What happened after that?

    Fast forward to yesterday...

    By ANDREW BRIDGES, Associated Press Writer Wed Jul 12, 6:09 PM ET

    WASHINGTON - People infected with the virus that causes AIDS will soon be able to take a once-a-day pill that combines three drugs in a "cocktail" therapy that can be swallowed in a single dose.

    <snip>

    The medicine will still be expensive: more than $1,100 for a month's supply.

    <snip>

    About 40 million people worldwide, including 1 million Americans, are HIV positive. Each year, roughly 5 million people are infected with HIV and 3 million die from AIDS, according to the World Health Organization.

    If there was a cure for AIDS would they tell us?

    We shut up. Maybe now we can actually talk about it.

    The sad part imho is that talk is probably the only thing that will ever happen.

    Outside of the left vs right paradigm? I'm pretty sure that's a place most folks that are interested in politics fear to tread. From what I've seen in my travels outside of the paradigm Bush and Clinton look like the two sides of the same coin.

    So, go after Clinton, too. If Clinton looked the other way, as Bush did, then they both need to be held accountable. Get out the facts, and let the chips fall where they may.

    The "hey, everybody does it" argument is just immorality posing as equity.

    I don't believe this at all. But if true, Joseph's solution is warranted.
