Since Al Gore once claimed he invented the internet, perhaps he invented global warming.

    Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

Run a “Global Cooling” Snow Cone Stand

[IMG]Freeze out cataclysmic environmental scare tactics with a little humor. The Oklahoma University College Republicans gave out free snow cones to students for an event they called "Global Cooling Day."
Stage an event like this one to grab the attention of your campus and raise awareness on the real facts of the global warming phenomenon. Engage with students and debunk some of the myths and cool the hyperbole surrounding the issue.
OU CRs simultaneously used the event to promote their first meeting, sign-up members, and sell CR shirts. A tent and tables were set up at the busiest spot on campus, and OU CRs gave away nearly 1,000 snow cones each day.
Prior to your "Global Cooling Day" event, arm your College Republican chapter with solid talking points on the issue, and then kick-back and enjoy the sun. The facts are on your side.

Well, since he never claimed to have invented the Internet, the point is moot.

Thanks for correcting me on Gore. I have never heard Gore's quote denied before. During the 2000 campaign, I remember even some of Gore's supporters on TV indicated they couldn't understand why Gore felt he had to say such a thing. Apparently, they were not informed either. Based on his supporters not denying it, I assumed it was true.

    Predictions of Global Warming?

Well, first of all, anyone who predicted global warming or cooling had a 50-50 chance of being right. :tongue3:

More to the point, the one thing weather data that has been collected has shown is that weather is cyclical. It is not enough to show trends and as far as digging into the icepack goes, those calculations are probably tainted by an assumed time figure.

Also, if Global Warming is indeed happening, and if it is a natural event, what makes us think that we can do anything to change it. If you think that we can accelerate or decelerate the process, that is an opinion, but not provable as there is no laboratory big enough to simulate the effect of all these things on a planetary scale.

    Much ado about nothing!

Do you have any experts on the other side who don't have their own agenda... which usually includes funding or promotion for themselves?

This implication of yours that the only people who can be honest about the data are left-wing environmentalists is absurd.

If there is an implied question in that response... YES. Scientists dependent on a problem needing more research to continue funding (and thus their own funding and opportunities for advancement) have a strong motivation for bias... Every bit as strong as other groups that presumably have a just as much vested interest in the future of the planet as these alarmists.

I believe there is indeed strong evidence of a global warming cycle. That is really not the issue. The issue is this . . . Is the warming the result of human activity? For that there is evidence on both sides, but I think it prudent to reduce our emission of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. After all, the earth is the only place we know of that can support human life. We had best err on the side of conservatism when it comes to messing up our environment. This is not a political issue, but one of great importance to all. Liberals and conservatives, progressives and moderates all breath the same air, drink the same water, and live on this pale blue dot called Earth.

I would agree that it is prudent to reduce so-called "greenhouse gasses" if for no other reason, than the effect on the human population in areas where they are produced. That being said, it is also crucial to balance that against other needs. An unbalanced view that gives favor to one aspect of our existence benefits nobody.

The fact is that we are very dependent on energy, manufacturing, and other processes that emit these pollutants. This can only be resoved through development of alternative energy sources, and changes in manufacturing processes. These are neither cheap, nor easy. Also, there is one particular alternative energy source which, while much cleaner will never be developed because of fear.

Everyone is great at identifying problems, but that is easy. Try coming up with an effective solution that will satisfy everyone.

Global Warming is just a political talking point to try to advance a position that has consistently failed because it does not speak of solutions, only problems that people care less about than the conveniences of their lives.

Hard to believe, after all this time, some people still believe that one. Just so you don't embarass yourself again, from the urban legends experts, Snopes.com:

Claim: Vice-President Al Gore claimed that he "invented" the Internet.

    Status: False.

Origins: Despite the derisive references that continue even today, Al Gore did not claim he "invented" the Internet, nor did he say anything that could reasonably be interpreted that way. The "Al Gore said he 'invented' the Internet" put-downs were misleading, out-of-context distortions of something he said during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "Late Edition" program on 9 March 1999.

You're a sucker only as long as you let them do it to you.

Here is the quote from the Wolf Blitzer interview
No, Al Gore never claimed to have invented the internet, what he said was that he created it.

Your statement is misleading. Here is what Al Gore actually said:

"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

For Gore to say that he "took the initiative in creating the Internet" is not quite the same as saying he created it. Surely you can see the difference.

No, I am agreeing only that there are health concerns from the emissions of the factories in this country and others. Nothing more.

Global warming argues that we are causing this phenomena and that something must be done before the polar ice cap melts and we drown, or the plant life dies and we have no food, or other doomsday scenarios.

As Christians we should know that there is only one doomsday scenario that matters. God will poor out various judgements on the people of the earth and finally destroy it with fire.

Seems to me he is taking authorship for the idea. However, what else would you expect from someone like that (my attempt to be nice and not be specific :) ).

I don't see that my quotation is misleading at all. I quoted Gore word for word. He claimed that his actions as a congressman led to the creation of the internet. As your larger quote shows he also claimed the credit for
I don't think he was saying he invented the idea of the internet and I don't think anyone does, but he thought that his congressional vote somehow allocated funding to create it. This is a false statement because the internet had been around for quite a while before that.

I don't think he was lying, he just did not know. I don't think he is lying about global warming, I think he realy believes the junk science he is quoting. Gore is not a liar, he is just wrong. He is not malicious, just ignorant. That of course does not make him any less dangerous.

He probably really believed love story was about himself too.

In fact, Vin Cerf, who more than anyone else, did invent the internet, confirmed Gore's statment.

Gore was an early supporter of the internet and it's uses. And he did indeed take the initiative to make it what it is today.

In May 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievements honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three decades of contributions to the Internet. "He is indeed due some thanks and consideration for his early contributions," said Vint Cerf.
    http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp

But since Cerf is one of those "reality based" guys, who thinks there is such a thing as objective truth, youi might not want to hear what he has to say.

    How about this one:

"In all fairness, it’s something Gore had worked on a long time. Gore is not the Father of the Internet, but in all fairness, Gore is the person who, in the Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet."

The flaming leftist who made this defeinse of Gore's claim?

    Newt Gingrich.

He probably really believed love story was about himself too.

    Guess what...

The real information: An article the Tennessean quoted Erich Segal, the author of "Love Story" incorrectly. The Tennessean quoted Segal as saying that "Love Story" was based on both the Gores. Segal claims that he was misquoted in that article, and explained in the 12/14/97 issue of the New York Times, that the male lead, Oliver Barrett IV, was modeled after Gore and Gore's Harvard roommate, actor Tommy Lee Jones.

When Gore made the comment about "Love Story", he stated that, "Segal had told some reporters in Tennessee that it was based on him and Tipper." (also from the 12/14/97 NY Times piece). Notice the actual quote is that he heard that Segal had told people that he and Tipper were the inspiration for "Love Story." And yes, Tennessean did report that, but Segal had been misquoted. So, in summary, a reporter misquoted Segal, and Gore mentioned the article where Segal had been misquoted.

They gotcha again. Don't forget the one where Al Gore was accused of shooting Lincoln.
