    um, not to be a naysayer...but technically didn't Pope John Paul II assume the papacy in 1978 (October I believe)?

    The Pope before him, Pope John Paul died in October 1978 only several weeks after having assumed the papacy of Paul VI (an interesting subplot to The Godfather Part 3) who died in 1978. So technically no Pope died in 1981. Just fact checking. :)
