The wife tried it, it took about an hour to install but failed and now she has been sitting for about half hour waiting to finish the uninstall and see what headaches have been added free of charge by the wonderful, newly improved/unimproved Vista :tear:

I finally ditched Vista altogether on this laptop and installed PCLinuxOS. It is great. The version of WINE it has even runs some Windows programs very well, including Adobe Photoshop.

I bought an upgrade copy of Vista for my desktop PC.

After nearly 2 hours, it installed and then my sound would not work. I had to uninstall and return to Xp.

Recently, I heard that Creative had updated the drivers for my PC that would work with Vista. I have tried several times to reinstall Vista only to run into a BSOD about 20 minutes into the install each time.

Vista is sitting on my shelf.

Downloaded a great linux based program that recovers passwords on both Windows and Linux systems called OPHCrack.

You let it boot up on cd instead of windows and it searches in just a few seconds for passwords saved on your pc.

found my boot password quick. One need not reformat because of forgetting password to get into windows with this prog at hand.

    Forgot...

OPHCrack also works on Mac systems too.!

After it brings passwords up on screen, just write them down and then reboot. It will boot back in Windows or whatever OS you are using.

Speaking of blue screen of death, I've been fighting a problem for weeks. About once a day it comes along. Doesn't seem to be any program, time of day or activity seems to affect it.

Ran day and a half in safe mode so I think it is software rather than hard ware but it has been a problem. I restored to the first of the month - before it started and no help. Uninstalled all new software but it still occurs. Uninstalled itunes this morn - they had given an update.

And windows xp sp3 is on the way and all the headaches that may entail :tonofbricks:

Have you tried a repair install of Windows, excentric? Or written down the codes shown on the BSOD so they can be looked up to see what caused the crash?

I may try a repair soon. I've been uninstalling recent stuff to see if that might pick it up. Blue screen tells me it is win32k.sys Also mentions Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area as well as that it is probably a driver.

It mentions shutting off caching and shadowing in bios as well.

The address listed seems to vary.

    BF805497 Base at BF00000, date stamp 45F013F6

It sends a ton of junk to Microsoft but their message only tells me there is a problem and they don't know how to fix it.

It has been doing okay today after I uninstalled itunes and all its associated junk.

Just blue screen again after 48 hours.

    Stop: 0x00000050 (0xf1913008,0xx800000000, oxbf805497,0x00000002
    win32k.xyx - address BF805497 base at bf00000, datestamp 45f013f6

It seems to occur after I've surfed a long time and then go to stand by for awhile. Uninstalling firefox and thunderbird to see if that might be it - they have also been crashing now and then.

Tried to get to restore console and it says I'm typing in the wrong administrator password so that isn't an option. May have to reinstall to see if it is software or not.

SP1 installed on my HP Pavilion DV6000Z without incident. Can't say I noticed any huge improvement in performance after the update, though.

They are saying the performance enhancement was small and that might even be placibo effect  so the wife is going to hold off till they fix the thing before she tries again.

My xp rig is still blue screening after changing everything I can think of and removing all programs since I started having problems so am about to say the hardware is tired and wants to go to that big junk heap in the hill

Since I had to buy a new computer I was forced to downgrade from xp to vista sp1. So far no problems with the OS, but then again I have only had it for 24 hours or so.
