How do we know when to apply and understand Prophetic text to have a "literal" or a "Spritual" Fulfillment?

3 mail areas in Biblical prophecy

How to intrepret OT ones concerning coming Holy Spirit, and Israel being blessed in last days, and messiah actually ruling from his throne in jerusalem?

If the literal sense makes sense, seek no other sense. Anytime a person thinks it does not mean what it says because that is inconsistent with my understanding of another text, they should tread slowly. An understanding that accepts the literal sense of both passages is far better than one that nullifies what one passage says in order to perserve our understanding of the other.

All this is code for the amillinnalist view is dubious. :)

Your first sentence is a methodology that is not found in the Bible. In fact it was this very approach to God's Word - specifically the words of their Messiah - that repeatedly tripped up the Jews of the first century.

We should learn from their mistakes. Not follow in their hermeneutical footsteps.

How did the NT writers use the OT?... that might help. That concept has affected my hermeneutic the most.

It all has a literal fulfillment. What is symbolic represents something literal.
