If their goal was unity, then I can see no other course than to simply recognize all forms of baptism. I don't believe many people would join an organization that does not have respect for their beliefs.

I don't think they went so far as to prescribe one form or the other. They simply recognized that believer's baptism was preferable for several reasons. Somewhere I have a footnote that lists the book that discusses it in detail if you're interested.

    Off to bed,

What two denominations are you referring to? Lake Street and Judson are both, I'm pretty sure, ABC. AWAB is not a denomination, any more than the Dominicans are a Church.

individual member of both AWAB and Fremont Community Church (which is ABC and is not AWAB)

    Haruo,

According to Clint, Baptist denominations aren't really denominations anyhow.
I believe that AWAB fits that definition.

I received a reply on my e-mail today. This is some of what he said:
According to a representative of the ABC, believer's baptism is not required in order to be a Baptist. According to this, Baptists don't even need to require baptism at all.

    Tuor, you said:
I looked them up just now and their pages don't even mention the Lord's Supper or baptism at all. Very sad... However, they DID mention being 'affirming, accepting' and a lot of other politically correct wording. Sad.......

I would wish we could prevent them from using the name Baptist. [IMG] They are certainly NOT True Baptists.

    LOL,

My understanding of "baptist" is not drawn from thin air. Leon McBeth, Buddy Shurden, and company all point out that baptists are not united by common doctrinal beliefs.

    Joshua

P.S. Diane - I define a Christian as a person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died for our sins and was resurrected. How is your definition different.

Tuor, I wanted permission to quote him from another thread (because we are not supposed to bring statements from one thread to another without permission or post quotes from another persons personal website) because he answered about his churches affiliations and their beliefs about baptism... and I had already admitted that I did not have any expertise on the 143 or so Baptist groups. His church is affilitated with the same two groups as this pseudo baptist church.

Actually, we're Alliance and UCC. In my experience, believer's baptism is normative within the Alliance; which (sadly) no longer seems to be the case in the ABC.

Why do you believe that is sad if in your own congregation a believer's baptism is not a requirement?

Tuor, Because - as a baptist - I believe that believer's baptism is the most faithful expression of the ordinance.

So you believe that a believer's baptism is superior to infant baptism?

There is much argument over the semantics of "denomination." For me, personally, "Baptist" is a denomination. The different different types of Baptists as defined by their affiliations or doctrinal statements are "sects." I try to stay consistent on these designations. As I say, however, there is much debate about the definition of these terms.

If you are referring to the ABC-USA, their website does offer both of these criteria as I posted last night. Please refer to this link and the quote at the top of page 3 of this thread: http://www.abc-usa.org/identity/idstate.html

So you look down upon those who believe in infant baptism.

"Look down" isn't the accurate term. I prefer the tradition of the early church over the established tradition of the majority of Christians. They prefer the latter. It's a matter of different perspectives.
