Actually, according to the Bible definition of that word, it is an illegitimate child... a child born out of wedlock.

If one is able to convince others that a child is supposed to raise his or her younger siblings it frees the parents conscience of the fact that they are shirking responsibilities.

I respectfully disagree. It teaches the children how to raise their own families. This kind of teaching is commanded in the Bible. The older women are to teach the younger women and that's what these parents are doing. Plus, they are teaching their sons not to be slobs so their wives don't have to pick up after them all the time. :thumbs:

I notice one thing in that verse you quoted, Sue...

The older women are to teach the younger women. It does not say the older children are to teach the younger children.

Children are to be taught by adults, not other children.

Also, the verse you gave is dealing with teaching in the Church. It is not speaking of familial teaching.

Also, the Word of God says 'Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.' It does not say 'Children obey your brothers and sisters...'

If a kid gets hurt & has to go to the hospital while dad's at work, why shouldn't the eldest be given the responsibility to assume temporary control ?

Children are obeying the Lord by submitting to the authority the parents have placed over them...whether it be school teachers, babysitters, Grandma and Grandpa, or older siblings.

I too am astounded at some of the things I read. Because children (Even teens) have no input regarding medical care choices once the child has arrived at the Hospital. To proceed with care, Doctors often need the consent of the parent, or whoever is legally designated in filling that role.
When my child stays overnight with a few of his friends, I have a note with my signature which allows the parents to make these choices, having input regarding my child's medical care. Even a note from the parent can't give a child this type of authority.

Hiya Joe.

I meant the oldest kid would assume control of the household while mom brings the kid in for care. It happened to me, all the time. Several times I had to watch my brothers & sisters while some emergency took place.
