400 police in anti-terror raids

Held ... prominent Muslim cleric Abu Bakr is among those arrested in Melbourne this morning / File FIFTEEN people, including a prominent Muslim cleric, were arrested in raids involving some 400 officers in Sydney and Melbourne this morning in an operation police said "disrupted ... the final stages of a large scale terrorist attack".

Nine people were arrested in Melbourne, including Abu Bakr, a radical cleric who has praised Osama bin Laden, while another six were held in Sydney.
Those arrested in Melbourne are expected to appear in court this morning. ( More: Abu Bakr)

Minister and police officials said today the suspects had been allegedly stockpiling material that could have been used in a chemical attack.

People have been arrested, one has been shot, All were stockpiling explosives, and it looks like the attack was planned for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, yet details are still sketchy at this stage.

One of the suspects wanted to die a martyr, a police officer said in court.

"I'm satisfied that we have disrupted what I would regard as the final stages of a large-scale terrorist attack ... here in Australia," New South Wales Police Commissioner Ken Moroney told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

He later said he expected more arrests "in coming days and weeks."

More terrorists were brought in today, one of those arrested yesterday refused to stand up in court, and began ranting about Allah, yet the lawyers representing him and the others charged did everything to shut him up, as his confession of rage has helped provide more evidence against them. It is genuinley amazing how thick these people are.

It is reported that they were stealing cars and re-birthing them in order to finance the explosives. I suppose that the attitude is that if you are stealing for Allah, then it is o.k!
