Is the city of Babylon in Revelation the same as the ancient Babylon of Iraq?

I grew up under teaching that the city referred to as Babylon in the Revelation was called Babylon due to its wickedness and the fact that it would rule the world but not its geographical location. With this in mind the "New" Babylon could be London, Geneva, New York, or even Washington D. C.

I also remember that the New Testament Christians referred to Rome as Babylon for some of the same reasons. Many Christians believe that the Babylon of Revelation will be Rome because it leads the Roman Catholic Church.

But much of the new literature (Left Behind series and others) focuses on a literal interpretation that the ancient city of Babylon, at least partially rebuild recently, would again become the capital city of the world.

    What do you think? [IMG]
