WASHINGTON - It was more pep rally than news conference, with the mayor and city officials wearing red Washington Senators caps, the ones with the curly "W" on the front. Baseball returned to the nation's capital for the first time in 33 years Wednesday, with an announcement from Major League Baseball that the Montreal Expos will move to Washington next season.

And they wouldn't have to change the nickname much - Washington Exposes(the French word with the little mark over the e). [IMG]

I heard a couple of folks mention that they should nickname them the Senators, but I like the suggestion of calling them the Gray's in honor of the Negro League team that used to play in the area. Washington Gray's...like the sound of that and the honor it brings to so many that were not allowed to play with "the best".

I agree. Too many great players never had a chance to have an impact. I went to the Washington Baseball Club site

    http://www.baseballindc.com/

    and voted for the Grays.

They probably won't use the "Senators" nickname because the city is upset that it has no representation in the U.S. Senate.

How about the Washington Bilderbergers? [IMG]

The name Senators is the property of the Texas Rangers. So they can't use it unless they buy it.

I like the idea of the Grays, too, Roger. With the high African-American population in DC, and the fact that the wearing of Negro league gear has become popular, I think it would be great to honor those players of old in that way.

What is Baltimore's big problem? The DC team will be NL I would guess, and no real competition unless it came to a World Series.

I think DC was a great choice. Sorry, Vegas.

DC is an excellent choice. I am an O's fan, but I am very happy to get a team in Washington. Looking forward to it. Angelos is probably worried about losing $$$.

The article says that their season opener will be in Philly. I plan to go.

Yep, I'm looking forward to attending a few NL games. I believe Angelos is worried that he is going to have to spend some money on us fans. I use to have season tickets to the Os, but it got to where my girls couldn't even get an autograph at the Park (at least from the Orioles). The stadium was being packed almost every game and we kept getting less and less for our money. I didn't renew one year, and only take in 2 - 3 games a year now. It did give me a reason to go see the Bay Sox, and the kids had a great time over there. Of course, they are teenagers now, with one in college, so baseball does not interest them much anymore.

I am so excited about this. It has been a disgrace that there has been no baseball team in the nation's capital for so long. I haven't been to Washington for several years, but I will go this summer specifically to see a game.

I voted for the Grays, too. It seems to be second only to the Senators. Of course, maybe you and I, C4K were the only ones voting for the Grays. Maybe everybody should go up and vote for the Grays to see if it can be pushed up to first.

Too bad for baseball. Every team there has bellied up (I love the Twins - went to the opening game at Met Stadium when they moved to Minnesota). Never could support pro sports team.

But I guess DC is now the 6th largest metro area in the US so deserves a team. Senators is the traditional name and hope they return to it.

'Grays' is throwing a bone to the racial minorities of old (majority of population of DC itself, but NOT the demographics of the metro area).

Is "Black Sox" still available? Anything connected to scandal should fit the team from DC.

I certainly hope that DC mayor Marion Berry knows that the "crack" of the bat is not an illegal substance.
