    ABOUT BAYANIHAN LINUX

The Bayanihan Linux software is a project of the Open Source Group of the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI). The project then was proposed to start by July 2001 but due to lack of funding, the development of the project was postponed. The Open Source Group composed of seven (7) people including the Project Leader finally started their study and development on a possible Open-source based desktop solution software last September 2001.

On January 2002, the Open Source Group first opened up the idea of a possible Open source-based desktop solution to the public during an Open Source Symposium hosted by ASTI. The symposium was attended by representatives from the government, academe and media. Allot of speculation on the software appeared. Ever since then, people had been awaiting for the final release of the Bayanihan Linux software, then still called as the ASTI Open Source CD.

Finally, on May 2002, the ASTI Open Source Group conducted an Open Source Roadshow to different provinces of the archipelago. The roadshow became a venue for the group to introduce the Open Source-based desktop solution software. Determined to know what would be the impact of the software to the mass, the group demonstrated it to their intended audiences. The masses readily accepted the software. It was an awesome revelation to the group!

After the initial testing of the software, the group realized that the software has to have a name before it's final release on June 13. A special taskforce composed of four (4) persons was formed to detemine the packaging requirements and name for the software. After a few hours of brainstorming for a name, the taskforce finally decided to recommend two names to the agency head. The recommended names were Fiesta Linux and Bayanihan Linux.

    BAYANIHAN LINUX

It was decided that the BAYANIHAN LINUX would be more appropriate for the Open Source-based desktop solution software.

BAYANIHAN is a Filipino tradition where people in a community help their neighbor in physically moving their house to a different place.

BAYANIHAN embodies the spirit of the Open Source movement. BAYANIHAN connotes people joining in and helping those in need. It also implies a movement from one place to a hopefully better place.

LINUX was added to the final name since the software's basic framework is LINUX. It was built on top of a Red Hat Linux operating system.

The BAYANIHAN LINUX software is being distributed in CD format. It can also be downloaded from this site in .iso format.
