Thank you very much Jay Adams and the nouthetic view of human behavior. Jay is the one who refined the view just stated. He is only partly right...

Actually it does have a lot to do with genetics. So does homosexuality, unbridled heterosexuality, violence, envying, strife, fear, backbiting, gossip, slander, thievery, etc, etc. Genetical we all have a predisposition to sin, period. So when someone tells me that they were born a homosexual, it no longer argue that point. That is not modern psychobable, it is several thousand years old. About 2000 if we are talking Romans 3:10,23 or about 3000 if we are talking about the passage that Paul was citing there. Sin is still sin, no matter that we are naturally predisposed to wallow in it...

Certainly God delivers some people from the struggle with some sins at the moment of salvation. But many continue to struggle with the same sins day in and day out for years. The only time we will experience full deliverance from the struggle with sin in the body is when we no longer have these bodies. If you deny this, you are decieved and you are calling God a liar!

Verse 8 speaks of the innate tendency toward sin, verse 10 speaks of specific acts of sin. As long as we are in the flesh we will struggle with this. As believers, we have the capacity to chose not to sin, we do not have the capacity to never sin again. To argue that just because God delivered one person from a specific temptation that He will necessarily deliver all is not only bad theology, it is not true.

Good Theology is true to life.

Sin is not genetic. It is spiritual. And regardless of who this Jay is or has done I am just a born again sinner who walked away from that mess. What is bad theology and poor hermeneutics is to conflate a genetical argument with a spiritual one.

    Amen

The Lord hasn't delivered me from the craving - he appears to have made it worse - and I rejoice for it. Every day a victory.

He must really love me to strengthen me so.

    Hallelujah!

    Praise God

Everyone of us has a propensity to do all sin. Everyone of us could be a murderer, a thief, a pedophile, a glutton, or an alcoholic. No one has any more or less propensity than another. Sin is sin and we are all susceptible to it on any level.

Mat 5:28 But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

What ever you treasure, what ever is important to you is found in your heart. Sin and rebellion against God begins in your heart. It is not a physical disability, it is a spiritual propensity. Those who struggle with sin do so because they have not gone far enough in changing their view of it.

We are not victims of our bodies we are offenders of righteousness.

    Ephesians 2:1-10
    (1) And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins;
    (2) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
    (3) Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
    (4) But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
    (5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;
    (6) And hath raised [us] up together, and made [us] sit together in heavenly [places] in Christ Jesus:
    (7) That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in [his] kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Praise God for the "But GOD!!!"

I disagree with you. I do think that those who CONTINUE to sin do so because they have not gone far enough in changing their view of it but struggling with sin is something we will do for the rest of our lives. Paul speaks of his struggle with sin - doing what he doesn't want to do and not doing what he wants to do. We all will struggle with particular sins whatever they may be. But with the new life in Christ, we now have the ability to overcome that desire to sin - but it doesn't always mean that struggle and desire will be taken away. Even the most pure in heart can struggle - and the struggle is not sin.

Your post is rather convoluted. using words like "struggle" does nothing to make your point.

Some people, thanks to their past, their genes, whatever, have a propensity to certain sins. I know that there are some who struggle with pornography - yet that would be the last sin I'd struggle with. It's too gross for me. But for others, they still have a desire to seek it out - while they know it's wrong and have prayed for it to no longer have any hold on them. They have the ability, through the Holy Spirit, to overcome the desire - but it doesn't mean that the desire is taken away from them. For some believers it will be. For others, it just might be that thing that they need to constantly lean on Jesus in order to daily and hourly fight it to overcome it. Just because they're saved doesn't mean that they won't still struggle with a sin but with Christ, they can win the battle. Make more sense?

Sure but you do err. We are not a victim of desire. No part of scripture suggests anything of the sort. We need to stop treating sin like it is a disease thrown upon us. It is that mentality that keeps people in bondage.

That happens when we entertain sin. It is like the birthing process James addressed in James 1:14-16, "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. " That is what makes sin so dangerous. It is so dangerous because too often the person does not realize what is happening to himself until it is too late. Too often they associate with those who help them sin by saying nothing or they live the same lifestyle themselves. That is the reason we need people around us who love us enought to tell us the truth.

I believe "moderation" is the key word concerning the consumption of beer.

After I had my gall bladder removed, and without the bile to digest, any meat I ate cause serious cramps, very serious, very painful.

I was told by a friend than wine would relieve the cramps, being "desperate", I purchased a bottle, and found that about a half a glass would stop the cramps as soon as it was drank.

Having to be careful about what I ate, and where, I also noticed that "buttermilk" and "onions" (Hamburgers) helped to prevent the cramps.

Since then my system has "Adjusted", and I no longer have to be concerned with what/where I eat, or any need for wine.

"Personally", I don't think Jesus drank wine, here's why.

Nu 6:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD:

] 3 He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

When Jesus came, he no doubt, had made a vow to "Separate himself unto the Lord" his entire life,

and the effort to get him to drank "Vinegar" on the cross was an effort to get him to break that vow.

The last time I yielded to a Lust of the Flesh I felt utterly vile for days.

The memory of that conviction banishes that particular temptation for me when it comes around.
The man who doesn't realize he is being tempted is the one who yields to temptation. Lack of conviction is a warning sign that we aren't repenting, and that can drive away the holy spirit.

Why take such a deadly risk for any pleasure the world has to offer?
The Lord might not tempt you beyond your strength, but the devil will at the drop of a hat and drop the hat himself.

    God bless

What absolutely destroys your "nazarite theory" is that the New Testament clearly states that Jesus drank the fruit of the vine (that is, grapes) which is explicitly forbidden by those who have taken the Nazarite vow. It does not matter if the drink is fermented or not (Numbers 6:3-4).

The idea that we can do something because Jesus did it is risky at best.

I don't know any of us who could go 40 days in the desert without food or water.
Or raise a dead man - or even survive an untreated viper bite for that matter.

If he drank wine for pleasure it would have been carnal, so it must have been strictly for thirst. Was he capable of getting drunk?

If you drink alcohol for pleasure it is carnal, and if you drink because you can't get along without it it is worse.
If you eat for pleasure and not to satisfy hunger then it is gluttony.

On the other hand to drink simply to prove it isn't carnal or sinful - that is pride.

    God bless

    Welcome to the Baptist Board.

However I suggest you may be giving the lazy devil far too much credit, here. Why should we think the devil would expend the effort to pick up a hat that we, ourselves, have already dropped, just to repeat the process??
