    One of the limitations of the Windows NT/2000 defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system.

    PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000/XP hibernation files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).

    I have used this program for quite a while, but the other day I got a message from my Internet Provider that there was a problem with me using the Bounce Function.... If, as is often the case, the address of the sender of the spam, is unreal, it "Bounces" back onto the ISP with my name as the sender... Also, if something I bounce has a virus, it comes back to the ISP showing my computer as having the virus... SO, I eliminated Mailwasher and downloaded Spamihilator and it works great and does not bounce anything to my ISP download it at www.spamihilator.com

    Thanks for the suggestion. I checked out Spamihilator with a couple of my favorite freeware download sites. It received six ducks (the highest rating) from Nonags and 4/5 stars from WebAttack. I think I may give it a try!

    Pegasus Mail I have begun to use this free email client and really like it. It is not quite as easy to learn to use as Outlook Express (which I previously used), but it is much better overall. Here is a basic description from the Pegasus site:

    "Pegasus Mail is an e-mail client that runs on computers using Microsoft Windows: by client, we mean that it interacts directly with the user, allowing mail to be sent, read, filed, printed and otherwise manipulated through a graphical interface. Probably one of the most feature-rich mail clients available, most users say that they find the program easy to use despite its richness. Small and fast, Pegasus Mail can be left running permanently on the workstation and includes powerful tools to notify the user when new mail arrives."

    Thanks to those who posted OpenOffice.org! I have started using OpenOffice exclusively now. I type all of my sermon/teaching notes and outlines with the Writer program. It allows me to copy & paste easily from either e-Sword or BibleWorks. It is really great software! I can't believe it is free!

    Pastork, OpenOffice.org is absolutely the best free office software ever! The new 1.1 version even lets you automatically save in Adobe PDF format. It has many features not yet found in MS Office.

    I also am dismayed by Microsoft's licensing arrangements given the ubiquity of their software. I don't want my data files to be locked out if they decide to change formats in the future, so by using OOo, you get an open source XML-based format, as well as reading & writing MS Office files.

    I am a strong proponent of OpenOffice.org. I encourage everyone to try it out. Get it free, legally install on every PC you own. No activations, share it with your friends, and all totally legal. [​IMG]

    Yes, ColoradoRB, that is one of the great things about OpenOffice. I have put in on the church computer and several others have already put it on their home computers. This way we are all using the same Office program. So far, everyone I know who has tried it has really liked it. Thanks again for the heads up y'all!

    Checking "retry" or "ignore" says same thing.

    Checking "abort" yields the following: "Unable to import module. Data source may be corrupt or missing for this version. Check your internet connection and try again"

    Have tried over a period on several days, but no change! Any advice for a 'puter illiterate?

    Incidentally, it does the same no matter what I try to download, or which source I use!

    Hello, can anybody help me?

    I am looking for a little software/freeware that will convert asf/wma/ra into mp3. I am trying to burn a CD with nothing but mp3 sermons on it so I can listen to it while I drive. Unfortunately there are tons of sermons out there in different audio formats.....

    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    I didn't read the whole thread, but here are some of mine.

    www.mozilla.org

    some of the best browser and mail client freeware around, available for almost any os.

    Thunderbird is a mail client, works with POP or IMAP and is maybe not as pretty as Microsoft Lookout, but it is much less prone to being used as a tool for sending viruses to all your email buddies. very good customization options

    firebird is a very thin version of the Mozilla browser. I think Mozilla is something like 14meg, firebird is like 6.

    It also takes up very little space, and opens web pages up more. It has very good functionality, multiple tabs, pop-up blocking, easy to use security settings for cleaning up so web sites can't see where you have been. you can download tons of skins or themes, and extensions to do various other things. I have never had to restart it and it has never frozen my system a la IE.

    In case you don't know, Mozilla is the foundation for Netscape 7, it is the open source equivilent, and is very stable and used by many people in the UNIX world because it is much more universal and is much smaller, I can use the same mail and browser on my Solaris, Linux and Windows machines (until I get rid of the spawn of Satan completely :D )

    If you do have Linux or Solaris, check out www.sunfreeware.com, its a great site

    I just started using the freeware version of WinPatrol and like it so much that I am thinking about paying the $19.95 registration fee for the WinPatrol Plus version.

    Here is a basic descritption from the website:

    Also in Acrobat Reader, holding down the "T" symbol in the toolbar will bring up 2 more symbols. The one in the middle is for selecting text in a box for which I have never found a practrical use.

    The far right symbol is for selecting graphics. It can be very useful, as the text-selection tool will not select graphics or charts.

    "free" is the catch, here. I use MP3Toolz, but I had downloaded that a couple of years ago. It's a shareware version, but now it seems you have to pay to download even that. I'm glad I saved it to disk. I wish I could help more, but my last few searches yielded nothing worth keeping.

    I'd be interested in investing in a good program that will allow greater flexibility. I work a lot with my own CD's, ripping and making mixes (I have over 300 that I've purchased over the last 18 years), but in this time of great internet trading, software has made backing up a paid-for collection a challenge.

    I use the long, roundabout way of ripping each song, storing each as a .wav until I burn the CD. That way I don't get strange buffer underruns. I then encode each .wav to MP3 for final backup onto a data disc.

    IDEAS? I have Adaptec's Easy CD Creator which came with my external CD burner drive. Is there something better, more reliable and less hostile?

    you might be interested in using audiograbber. it can: rip songs and edit it so that you may cut portions of songs, etc. it has both a free version and a full version. this is the best mp3 ripping software that i've used so far.

    i am personally using these three softwares.

    1. Audiocrusher: to rip cd's to mp3, wav, wma, etc.

    2. MP3 Direct Cut: to cut mp3's.

    3. Audacity: to combined mp3's.

    all these three are freewares. you can download them at www.webattack.com
