I like Elmer Towns' Theology for Today.

It was text for one of my classes at LU.

I found it to be a great resource. :type:

Unfortunately it's out of print. 88$ for a used copy at Amazon! It's also the same price on eBay. Nonetheless, I appreciate your suggestion.

    Hi Jim,

I was thinking of reading it till I just read the heretic thread. Thanks for that heads up.

What thread is that? I highly recommend Grudem. I find the book very good.

Non-reformed and semi-reformed theologians will find Grudem ok, but as I said, he labeled those who adhere to the Permissive Will of God, such as Calvin, Spurgeon and other theologians as A.H. Strong, as heretical and all but condemned us to hell.

    No thanks.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Did Grudem state this in his text or was it cited in an article?

I was going to suggest Reymond myself. Other than his chapter on baptism, he is very scriptural. He goes off the reservation in the area of infant baptism, however, as appears, for the sake of his tradition.

The others mentioned are also great works. Hard to fault most of them, other than no one systematic hits every point just right.

It was a quote and afraid I can't find it just now. It can also be read in his Systematic Theology around page378...I think.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    I recommend three:

    A. H. Strong, Systematic Theology
    Charles Hodges, Systematic Theology
John Calvin, Institutes (And I concur with Jim's suggestion to include Calvin's commentary on Romans.)

The first revision of his Institutes was released in 1539 --the French version was published the following year. It was enlarged from the initial six --to 17 chapters. No change in his theology though. Just an expansion.

His commentary on Romans was released in March of 1540. I daresay that no difference in his theological stance was made in the space of mere months.

Some folks (not you) think that his Romans came much later as he matured theologically. But they are quite mistaken.

Fee is excellent, although not a systematic theologian. I haven't read this particular work, but he's a great biblical scholar.

I've read one of the books he co-authored -- How to Choose a Translation for all Its Worth (I believe that was the name). It was a good read. Because of my purchasing this book, ChristianBook offered the Exegetical-Theological Study as a possible read.

Thanks, jaigner. I'll go purchase this work and test the waters.:type:

His works are strong on biblical literacy. I found How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth to be very helpful.

I found Grudem to be a good reference to understanding the basics of various views and a few verses to support them, but it is sadly not more than a few pages in-depth on a lot of the areas I wanted to study.

Grudem does not do justice to the Barthian view of election:

Barth's view is a bit more complicated than this.:BangHead: However, I think it would be foolish of me to write Grudem off like a check. He does have some interesting things to say.

I have two of the commentaries TCassidy mentioned in Bible Explorer (Grudem is in BE, too). I'm still looking for A. H. Strong's.
