Yes, I understand what you are saying and your aim. I would hope that everyone who holds the label "doctor" would have training in languages and, as you said, be able to do the things expected of a person holding the highest degree. I think that is a respectable goal.

My own recommendation to another person who emailed me about going to Bethany was simple... go somewhere else and get the necessary tools, because many of them just cannot be taught and tested in a correspondence setting. I attended a seminary that required languages and therefore I was was able to parse and so forth. When I began at Bethany, all those tools were not of use because the degree level below it did not teach it and therefore the advanced student was not told to put those tools to use. If he still thinks he wants to go to Bethany, go ahead.

One friend of mine started from ZERO college and went all the way thru doctorate in another off-campus school. No way would I recommend that. I wouldnt suggest someone go that route from the get-go. Go to a school that forces you to learn biblical languages and all the necessary tools for exegesis, etc.

    Paid Response!

    Hi Paid,

    Long time no talk!

What, if I may ask, is wrong with RC Sproul's doctoral degree?

Help me if I am not out of the loop? I thought he got (one) his doctorate at St. Andrew's in Scotland or some such?

    Let me know.

    sdg!

    UZ Response

    UZ,

    Amen and I agree wholeheartedly.

It is very seldom that a man with only the old BD or an MDiv can direct PhD dissertations like David Buttrick does (did) @ Vanderbilt? He is semi-retired and in not-so-good health at the present.

It does happen from time to time though, when a man is so outstanding that "his gift makes a place" for him such as "Dr." Buttrick's has.

Amen? or Oh Me? to anyone who might question the person I cited?

    sdg!

    Hi Rhet,

Dr. Sproul received the Drs. from the Free University of Amsterdam in 1969 and the Ph.D. from Whitefield Theological Seminary in 2001.

    Memory fails?

I think both Sprouls Sr. & Jr. have doctorates from unaccredited Whitefield although Sr. has an impressive doctorate from the Free University. Jr., I think, only has the Whitefield degree. I may be mistaken on this and have something reversed. I'm doing this entirely from memory and didn't take the time to check. Please forgive my unstable memory.

    Paid,

The Whitefield program, it seems to me, is a rigorous one, though I suspect Sproul, Sr., did the Whitefield Ph.D. more to add respectability to the school rather than to gain additional training.

Sproul, Jr.'s, Whitefield doctorate is a DMin, I think.

    Whitefield is indeed rigorous.
