I do find the 50-50 on alcoholic communion surprising.

Pastor Greg, We took a vote in an adult S/S class a few years ago and our class of over 50 people, average age 45, was split 50/50. I was also shocked!

I find that one surprising as well.

I figured, being a Baptist board, that many more people would want to follow the real wine example.

Oh well, I suppose that nothing I read here really surprises me that much anymore. I had never realized before joining here that there were so many different opinions on so many biblical issues among Baptists.

I was not raised Baptist, so non-alcoholic communion was new to me when I began attending a Baptist church. I can see that this seems to be a hot issue for some, but I don't really understand why.

Can anyone explain why alcoholic vs. non-alcoholic communion is so controversial for some Baptists?

    * I only use the King James Version, but I don't believe it was 're-inspired' by God. I just feel that it is a far greater, and infallible, version from any other translation.

** As Primitive Baptist, I don't have a problem saying I'm calvinistic, meaning similar to Calvinist, and people here usually refer to us as hyper-Calvinist. Had the question read 'Are you a Calvinist' rather than 'calvinistic' I would have answered 'no'.

I don't believe Christians should drink at all and certainly not the Lord's Supper.

Diane, I don't want to hijack the thread, but what is your opinion of when Paul tells us that a little wine is good for the stomach?

Many things can be used medicinally Bro. James. We have other things now and also have clean water.

Non-alcoholic juice is used for the same reason that unleavened bread is used. Leaven (yeast) in the Bible is a picture of sin. Jesus' flesh and blood were sinless so the elements, which are pictures of His flesh and blood, ought to reflect that. To use leavened bread and/or fermented juice is, at best, to show a lack of understanding of the symbolism, at worst it is blasphemous.

    Genesis 40:11
Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand."

    Luke 10:34
He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
