Hey all, I'm new to the forum, nice place you got here!

Can you recommend a good book for me on the history of the Church? I'd like something that shows how the church was formed right after Jesus. Who formed it, where it was formed, where it spread, how it spread. What happened up to the reformation and beyond. I'm looking for a book with all the gory details and preferably containing references detailing where the author got their information from. Are there any good books about this universally recognized as a must read for all Christians?

"Miller's Church History" is fantastic, but it's a monster (over 1200 pages if you get it in one volume, instead of the 3 volume set).

"The Pelican History of the Church" is also excellent, and comes in 6 volumes.

"A History of Christianity" by Kenneth Scott Latourette in two volumes can be purchased very reasonably at christianbooks.com. Although very scholarly and thorough, they were written by a Christian for Christians. Latourette is a baptist who taught at Yale. He has some abbreviated versions of church history which can be downloaded from the internet.

I just recently finished two volumes of church history, mainly following the Baptists from Bible times to today. It starts with the Apostolic age and ends up with todays groups. It gives refrences to sources used to compile it, and it definatly gives detail of the persecussions. It highlights the groups holding Baptist doctrine through out the ages, and also gives detales of how the Catholic church became what it is. It gives detales of the Protestant groups formed from the Reformation and so on.
The two volumes are thick, but it caught my attention, and I read it all the way through. I just loved it, but thats only my opinion.
If you'd like to read it,it's:"Landmarks of Church History" (Two volumes) and compiled by Pastor Robert J. Sargent. It was published by Bible Baptist Church Publications. I'm not sure were you can get these books.
I borrowed these from a friend in Bible college. These are actualy the books for his class. I believe he bought his from the Tabernacle Baptist College, were he is going.
You might could visit their webpage and see if you can order it there, or look it up at an online bookstore if you're interested.
I do hope you find what you are looking for.
