"Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech."

Not sure of the veracity of this - the video I watched (MSNBC) showed several shots where you could see the teleprompter and it was where she was in the speech. The last shot i saw was not too far from the end.

My statement take nothing away from an amazing speech.

Glad it wasn't a problem when President Bush spoke. That could have been a disaster of Nukeeler proportions.

I would love to see a side by side comparison of the two. I watched the speech and read the prepared text but I am not sure where she went off. I know the pitbull/hockey mom line was not in the prepared text.

I remember just one point when she briefly seemed to look up questioningly, perhaps squinting...I don't know if that was the teleprompter, someone being escorted out (that was shown briefly too - I don't know exactly at what point it occurred or how long it took or what happened), or if it was just my imagination. No matter what, she's one cool cookie under pressure!

Breaking! The Breaking! Teleprompter didn"t Break!

    The Teleprompter did not break

Sarah Palin delivered a powerful speech last night, but she did not "wing it."

Which is what Erick Erickson, citing sources close to McCain, has written on his blog, RedState.

Erickson writes that "the Teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Gov. Palin was in the speech."

This claim has been picked up on Drudge and could quickly enter into the insta-mythmaking about a speech that need not be embroidered.

Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the Teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems.

Erickson writes that the same malfunction happened during Rudy Giuliani's speech earlier in the night. Again, I watched the Teleprompter during this speech, and it worked without problem. Giuliani, as is his wont, simply decided to go off-script and add some new lines, such as one attacking Obama for his "bitter" comments.

These extemporaneous comments, many of which drew huge applause, made the former New York mayor's speech run much longer than planned. So much so that a convention planner confirms that they had to scrap a planned video ahead of Palin's speech.

Breaking! this is the end of this post!

You know what I don't care whose making a speech, if they have to make a significant pause for applause, then should the teleprompter also be paused.
I don't know anything about stuff like this, but it seems reasonable to me.
Must be difficult for any of them to stay completely on track if it works this way.

I just got around to watching the speech on YouTube. Definitely have to give Palin props for being a very good public speaker with great attacks on Obama that were valid and humourous at the same time without going below the belt. She also did a very good job of promoting McCain, better than anything I've ever heard from McCain himself.

Picking her was probably the best move McCain has made in this campaign. I'm not sure it will be enough and I'm wondering if it might backfire if she becomes more popular than he is.

I agreed totally with your first paragraph. But I do not think any backfiring will occur.Having her on the ticket will get him the win.Having her as VP will do the country good when she takes office.
