Bush looks to appoint an Iraq war 'czar'

WASHINGTON - The White House wants to appoint a high-profile overseer to manage the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but has had trouble finding someone to take the job, the Washington Post reported.

At least three retired four-star generals approached by the White House in recent weeks have turned down the position. The war "czar" would report directly to United States President George W. Bush and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and would have authority to issue directions to the Pentagon and the State Department.

Retired Marine General John "Jack" Sheehan, a former top Nato commander, was among those who rejected the job. "The very fundamental issue is, they don't know where the hell they're going," Sheehan told the Post. He said he believes that Vice-President Dick Cheney and his hawkish allies remain more powerful within the Administration than pragmatists looking for a way out of Iraq.

Retired Army General Jack Keane and retired Air Force General Joseph Ralston were also approached and said they were not interested in the position. Ralston declined to comment while Keane confirmed he turned it down, the Post said.

Ex-generals don't want war czar job, no sir

In the latest twist in its quest for a winning strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan, the administration of US President George W Bush is eager to create the position of a "high-powered czar" to oversee wars in those countries. But when offered the job, three retired four-star generals turned down the White House.

Maybe the generals know something about these wars that makes them not want the job.

The three generals approached were John "Jack" J Sheehan, Jack Keane and Joseph W Ralston. Of these, only General Sheehan spoke publicly about his reasons for rejecting the position. He said Vice President Dick Cheney and his advisers are too powerful and committed to continue the wars, especially the one in Iraq. Given their power and influence over Bush, no pragmatic solution of getting out of these wars can be developed.

Sheehan added, "The very fundamental issue is, they don't know where the hell they're going. So rather than go over there, develop an ulcer and eventually leave, I said, 'No, thanks.'"

The Republicans complain about the Democrats in Congress wanting to manage the war. Now it turns out, Bush doesn't even want to manage it! :laugh:

It's the self imposed no fault clause. But why not just continue to blame Clinton?.

Now I am sure one of these loyal right winger, bushbots will step up to the task. I mean, there are tons of people saying that bush has done a great job and IS doing a great job, why certainly one of these men will step into the position...
