Who's telling us that? I don't believe they will.

LE, the same folks that are telling us "there's not enough oil in ANWR to matter."

There's plenty of oil up there...especially considering the faulty logic used by some. You see, we don't have to quit using all our other sources of oil when we begin to reap ANWR's bounty...this oil will augment our other sources.

    SOURCE

But, hand-in-hand with drilling, MUST come an increase in refinery capacity. We must also simplify the confusing and ridiculous "custom blends" we must create to comply with all the regulations. More than 15 custom fuel blends are used throughout the country! (source) This is ridiculous...just making this policy sane (while remaining environmentally sound) would alleviate some problems.

You are quite correct; my fault. I was comparing a large corporation with an 8% profit margin (7.2% for ConocoPhillips) with an average retail store that needs to maintain 30-50% profit margins.

However, just remember, that even if the profit margin on gas were to increase to 10%, the government would still be making twice as much profit as the oil companies.

Addendum: I'm not certain, but I think the ConocoPhillips profit may have been 7.2 cents per gallon, and not 7.2%.

    Gasoline … (12,000 miles/year) / (25 miles/gallon) * ($2.80/gallon) = $1,344/year
    Cigarettes … (2 packs/week) * (52 weeks/year) * ($33/pack) = $3,432/year
    Beer … (4 six-packs/week) * (52 weeks/year) * ($8 /six-pack) = $1,644/year
    Automobile cosmetics … 1 set of custom wheel spinners = $4,000; 1 custom muffler = $1,500; 1 "boom-box" sound system = $3,000

    Gasoline price increase of 50 cents/gallon … (12,000 miles/year)/(25 miles/gallon) * ($0.50/gallon) = $240/year

Why should oil companies sell gas for less than people are willing to pay? What other consumer products should be sold for less than people are willing to pay?

Who wants the government - the federal government of course - to set product and service prices to protect us from all those "evil" companies?

Who also wants the government to set wages and salaries to protect those "evil" companies for all us "evil" workers?

Didn't the communists or socialists try this already?

Who would prefer that the supply and demand market continue to determine product and service prices as well as wages and salaries?

Who believes it's the government's responsibility to limit the compensation of corporate executives?

The question here isn't whether we believe some people make more money than we think they're actually worth but whether or not we think that, through our government, we have a right to limit what they can be paid by the people that pay them.

Perhaps the government should step in and regulate how much professional athletes are paid. Perhaps limiting them to double the salary of the average worker? After all, if we weren't forced to pay $7.50 for a hot dog, we could afford a couple more gallons of gas.
