I have been preaching to my two older sisters that smoking will kill them for about 50 years now. One is 92 and the other is 89; both in reasonable health for their ages.

Not justifying smoking by any means, but not all smokers suffer and die early on.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Yes, that is very true, but not a good enough reason to ignore the real dangers of smoking.

PS I'm glad your sisters are living to such great ages! Few people reach those brackets.

I know many smokers. In the US, the believers that I know who smoke, don't really want to smoke. Many have tried and failed to quit.

The ones in this culture are not ashamed of their smoking. It's common. It's not, what's a good word here.... taboo? It's as much a part of the culture as drinking coffee is.

While I suppose one could call a S.S. teacher who smokes, a bad example, I don't know that it fully works that way. I have talked with my kids about the health dangers and nastiness of smoking. I've also talked with them about the addictive nature of it. Other smokers (family members) have told them the same thing. If they take up smoking it won't be because of lack of information. It would be their own choice----and one that I blame on no one but them.

Many people who do not smoke find it very offensive. I have been around people who stink because they smoke and if I am around them very long my clothes will begin to smell like smoke. Their homes have walls that look brown with a scum on them.

Imagine that person talking to a non-Christian athlete while he is smoking. 1 Cor. 8 teaches if something is offensive then do not do it.

    I don't believe that.

My family has been in the funeral business for 59 years and I spent many years in medicine. Regular smokers may make it into their 70's, though many don't, but few make it into the eighties. The same with fat people, FWIW.

Even the smokers who make it into the seventies are rarely in good health, the norm is very poor health, beginning in the late 50's or so.

    True.

But smoking is a major contributor to many kinds of cancer and many other diseases that kill you, not just cancer.

My Dad smoked since he was a teen. He was in late Fifties and I can't count the number of times he told me, "They say smoking is bad for your health but here I am 5x years old and I don't know many people my age as healthy as me."

He died at age 63 of lung cancer.

Thank God he was saved 2 weeks before he died.

Only about 55 air-miles away, albeit due West, from the SW corner of NC, and only slightly further, 'as the crow flies' from the NC border than are Knoxville or Kingsport. Johnson City is the only fairly large TN city that is significantly closer, at some 15-18 air-miles. ;)

PS. Any who would like some good routing from most anyplace in the US to another should actually PM me. I'll give you my cell #, if one is serious, and I suggest I can probably give pretty good advice, in this, having done it for a while, like more than 40 years.

Of course (for any Baptist BB member) she/he can use this phrase/wording, here.

The forum is an 'open debate' type forum.

    Therefore/ergo, any/each she/he is allowed/permitted to/for using/employing any/all phrases/words, in/on this/that forum.

    It's a/an debatable/arguable forum, thus/therefore an open/shut case.

Is the weed for medicinal purposes? LOL!

If anyone is gonna convince my kids that smoking is way cool and they oughta try it, it would be the cool kids in the village. I'll guarentee you it wouldn't be from a Pastor/S.S. teacher, in my experience. These voices of love and wisdom speak of their faults and urge the youth to do better.

If a leader is giving the message the smoking is just awesome, I think there are other problems.

I like the idea that it would cost a Canadian $3000.00 a year to puff a pack a day.

    Cheers,

The sad fact is smoking is adictive. It steals your life and robs you blind. I have a brother who somked until he got so sick he nearly died. They call his condition C.O.P.D. He finally quit but it's far to late to recover from it. He's 72 now and can't walk across his own bedroom with loosing his breath. He can barely speak above a whisper.

I don't think condemning smokers will work it seems to only make them smoke all the more. At least that's what it did for my brother. Pricing tobacco real high doesn't work either because it only makes their rebellion worse.

Some say it isn't a sin but I disagree because it's slow suicide and killing yourself is a sin. Most smokers will deny that it's suicide. They refuse to believe it will kill them. Not even coughing for the first hour of every day will convince them. If they quit it has to be their own desire to do so.

Years ago a man worked under me and he often made the comment about it seemed like I could buy a lot of tools and asked me how I could afford them. We figured out how much he spent on cigarettes and he figured out that would buy some nice tools.

Later we got some life insurance and was only able to buy 1/3 the amount that I did for the same amount of money I paid for mine.
