Earlier this year, I changed my poor old windows`98 computer for a new XP . I had a telephone and modem plugged into the same socket via an adaptor, and both worked OK .......... with the new system there is no dialing tone when I pick up the `phone, and I can`t use it at all - but, as you see the internet/modem is working . Why can`t I get the `phone to work ?:BangHead: :BangHead:

Maybe you have the wires in the wrong jacks on the computer.

If that isn't the case either the phone is bad or modem is bad. Pull phone and plug it in somewhere else and see if it works. If it does I'd guess maybe the modem is bad.

Your modem should have two jacks on the back of the computer. One for "line in" & tha other to plug your phone in. If not someone put a really old modem in your "new" computer. Just check to make sure all the plugs are in snug!!!

I would think its a bad passthrough on the modem. If the modem is on hook, it shouldn't matter which side the phone and the line are plugged in, it should work regardless. Could be a bad phone or cable though, try what exscentric suggested.

It could be the modems speaker is just turned off. You can pick up another phone in the house to see if you can hear the computer dialing. You will hear several tones as it dials then it should make squaking noise. Check that first and let us know.
