In our area of the world, there are alot of Missionary Baptist churches, many of which are landmark. Our SBC church just sent a team to Mexico, had a great experience - gave out 4,000 Gospels of John, saw 10 salvations, lined up Bible studies in many many homes and even one (ahem)..."brothel". Most of our team members ended up with a terrible illness, and some of them were even hospitalized, missing their flight home. (Sorry for the recap - those of you who read that in the prayer forum) A local missionary Baptist pastor remarked yesterday that our guys deserved what they got, because they "shouldnta been there anyway". 3 people, same denom, different churches made similar comments, and it set me off. I know that all people of this denomination are not like this, surely, but I want someone to explain to me why we cant be happy for each other that Christ is being lifted up through each others efforts.
    So...let me have it. [IMG]

(edited to remove error regarding denomination)

IFB Tater? Missionary Baptists aren't IFB........

But that being really a not very important point, I can't imagine why anyone would have made a comment like that. It was unnecessary and unbecoming. Just today my preacher (IFB) made the comment that we ought always to be thankful when others are seeing people saved.

For the most part, I believe that IFBs have this attitude.....I think that for the most part all Baptists do, too, of any stripe.

Oh, and I'd be careful about getting too worked up or upset about something that you heard second- or third-hand. In the least you can alleviate some of your angst by imagining that whoever told you that must have misunderstood.

ok, maybe not IFB. But they do consider themselves to be fundamentalists. Sorry if I was wrong on that one.

Well....we-eelll....Who'd they think shoulda been there?!!!!!

I don't go for the whole "judgement of God" stuff. When I was a kid our church took us all up to Charlotte NC for a music competition. There was this one kid who was always start'n stuff, kinda behind everyone elses back. Stirrin the pot kind of stuff and then standing back and watching the fur fly.

When some sort of stomach bug hit our group, guess which kid it was didn't get sick? Yep, you guessed it. That one kid single kid didn't get sick. The rest of us were so sick that one guy fainted during our performance!

Folks that think the way your local's think, don't get out much!

TaterTot: When a group or individual goes forth to do something from the Lord you can count on opposition. This opposition can come in the form of being badmouthed or it could come in the form of a flat tire or a missed airplane, but it will come. Interestingly this does not mean that those who are talking and saying ridiculous things are undone, lost, or headed to hell. No it doesn't mean that but what it does mean is that the enemy is using them to do his bidding. So stay calm rest in the Lord, He is still on the throne and everything is going according to His plan

Three facts I try to remember that help me when confronted by situations such as this-

    1) Those that can or will, do.
    2) Those that can't or won't, criticize those that do.
    3) God knows who's who and will take care of the rewards in the end.

I am an IFB missionary in Mexico but I rejoice in what others do for the Lord here. There is a conservative and God-loving SBC group that has an awesome ministry up at the border and it has been my privilege to get to know and associate with them.

From my heart, Tater Tot, thank you and your group for coming and helping us in the battle!

I would have absolutely no respect for any one especially a pastor who would make such ridiculous comments.

God bless the men of your church who gave of their time, energy and health to serve the Lord!

Tater, I know how you feel the first time I went to Mexico someone in my on church asked me why do you wont to go there, there are people right here that need us. Of course at that time I headed up our street ministry and the same person asked why do we need a street ministry.

    Who knows

I don't understand. Why would they say that they shouldn't have been there?

    That's a good question.
It seems that a lot of people who think that way believe that illness or suffering happens to a person because of something they did wrong. Personally. That happened in the Bible too, where the blind man was thought to be blind because of sin, etc..

I was a member of a church that was appalled that I was in a bar, and that I wanted to visit the local strip club. We're not supposed to go to the unbelievers when they're gathered together, but it's ok to knock on their doors on private property and ask tell them they're going to hell.

I don't get the mentality either, but it happens. I figure if we're gonna GO, we should probably go where we're needed. It's just common sense that you can get more done in a brothel or a bar or a strip club when everyone is gathered, if speaking to as many people as possible is the goal. In fact, it's often easier and more productive to talk to a few people at once, some of us are better at that then the one on one thing, although both have their time and place.

I'm glad the people you know did their job. That's awesome! If you wanna be snobby, you can always say that Satan only attacks those who he finds threatening to his cause. LOL But...that would be going down to their level I guess. So, just smile and say "I disagree, I believe they went where they were called, and did a fine job", and leave it at that.

Not sure I would agree going into a bar or strip club is wise. the bible says "Abstain from ALL appearences of evil"what if someone you knew SAW you go into a place like that? would they not think you were there for the wrong reasons. We knew a couple who had problems in the past with drugs and alcohol. one day we went out to dinner that was next door to a bar and saw them both go in the bar, plus we hadn't seen them at church in months. the appearence and rightly so was they had backslidden. The bible also says a "Little yeast CORRUPTS the whole dough" Gal 5:9. so why put yourself in situation to be tempted and judged. Going to a "brothel" may have been going to far, going to them in their homes, towns, streets is a bit safer. IMHO

If these people who went and were serving God didn't have persecution then I would wonder if God's work was really being done. a good sign that someone is doing the right thing and God's work is they will suffer persecution. I know this from God's word and experence.

The reason these people made the comments is because they dont believe in the universal church and they dont believe in missionary sending organizations, such as the SBC and others have.

Are they opposed to missionaries in general, or just missionaries from denominations they think are in error?

It's hard to see how any Baptist group could be opposed to missionaries in general.

opposed to missionaries from any other group but their own. Surely we have some Missionary Baptists on this board that can clarify for us?

Is it because they are IFB landmarkers... remember according to them the SBC isn't a true church denomination. Don't let it get to you... Praise God.. Christ said persecution would come, and sometimes it even comes from "Christians"

Way back when I was a Landmark Missionary Baptist (ABA), the prevailing theological stance was that no church had authority to do mission work except Landmark Missionary Baptist churches. The SBC was especially despised by landmarkers. It was all a matter of the doctrine of "local church only." SBC churches were considered heretical because they were not "local church only", because they practiced open communion, and a few other things that didn't square with the landmark view of the church. The remark doesn't surprise me at all.
